During the period of his enlistment, this unit served in engagements with the Sioux and other Indian nations on the Minnesota and Dakota frontiers, and escorted supply trains to various remote outposts.

The Sylvester family tombstone lists several individuals including Franklin SYLVESTER, and the notation "Natives of Maine." He is recorded as "Franklin Died Oct. 31, 1864 Aged 30-3-25." He also has an individual stone recognizing his service in the army.
