Notes
Updated January 1, 2013. Compiled by Howder (www.howderfamily.com) from the following source(s):"Marriage intentions were published 4 Oct 1735, York, ME, for [Abel WHITNEY] and Mary CANE 'both of York'. He married 13 Nov 1735, York, ME, Mary CANE, daughter of Nicholas and Mary (PARSONS) CANE. She was born 19 Jan 1714/15, York, ME, and died about 1794, Gorham, ME. She married secondly, 10 Jun 1763, Gorham, ME, Samuel Haley CROCKETT, who died 19 Dec 1798, Gorham, ME. She and Samuel are buried in the Old Village Cemetery in Gorham, ME, however, no gravestone for Mary is found. Her burial there is from the records of Isaac Cobb."
"From McClellan's History of Gorham: 'Abel WHITNEY died before September, 1762, for at that time his widow Mary received a deed from Barnabas BANGS of a part of the thirty acre lot, 81. Mrs. Mary WHITNEY married second, June 10, 1763, Samuel CROCKETT.'"
NOTE: There is an obvious discrepancy with Mary's parentage that needs to be resolved.
