"In 1843 he came to Wisconsin, and spent the next year or two teaching near Pattengill. He then 'entered' 160 acres of government land in Mifflin township, which he cultivated and improved for about thirty years, meantime adding to his land until he has acquired 520 acres in all, which he still owns."

Their child Nettie (listed as "Nattie") is in the household along with a servant girl and a laborer. The households of Caleb (listed as "Charles") SYLVESTER (Eben's father), Lorenzo STEVENS (brother-in-law), and Caleb BAKER (brother-in-law) are all found on the same page of the Census record.

SYLVESTER, retired farmer, Mineral Point; is a native of Franklin co., Me., and was born Aug. 25, 1820; after reaching manhood, he came West to Wisconsin in the spring of 1843, and taught school near Pattengill; in the spring of 1846, entered land from government in this county and made a farm; in 1850, went to California, and returned in 1852; was successfully engaged in farming for thirty years, and still owns a good farm of 500 acres finely improved;... held the office of town Superintendent ofSchools, and was assessor for many years."
