(1) Erlenkotter Family Records: "The intention of marriage for Nathaniel GRINNELL and Ruth CLARK is recorded at Nantucket, Massachusetts [11 September 1756]. Although a record of their marriage has not been found, there is no question that the marriage took place. As noted in the birth records for Nantucket, she is called 'Ruth GRINNELL' in family records. (The incorrect entry noted in the published birth records for Nantucket is the identification for Ruth's parents.) The Grinnell Family Association of America and others report a marriage date of 1 October 1756, but an original record has not been found."

"Nathaniel GRINNELL is recorded at Tiverton, Newport County, Rhode Island in the 1777 military census. He appears as a head of family in the 1790 census at Lanesborough, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, where his family consisted of one male over the age of 16 years and two females. We cannot say if one of these females is Ruth because Nathaniel is reported to have had a second wife named Elizabeth who died in New York in 1813. Listed on the same census page is a Gideon GREYNOLDS, who is believed to be Nathaniel's son Gideon. Also listed at Lanesborough in this census as a head of family is Nathaniel's son-in-law Nathan WESCOAT."

"In the 1800 and 1810 censuses Nathaniel GRINNELL is listed as a head of household at Farmington, Ontario County, New York. In both years his family consisted of one male and one female over the age of 45 years. In 1800 he appears between John and Gideon GRINNELL, his reported sons. In 1810 he is listed just after Gid. GRINOLD and as the third entry after Jno. GRINOLD. Son-in-law Nathan WESCOAT also appears as a head of family at Farmington in both censuses."
