NOTES PROVIDED IN THE ERLENKOTTER FAMILY RECORDS:

"John GRINNELL and his family were pioneers in the Brownsville District of the Town of Farmington, Ontario County, NY in 1796. Accompanied by John's father, Nathaniel, they came by boat up the Mohawk River and then followed other waterways, traveling west until they reached Farmington."

"On 22 March 1799 John GRINNELL of Farmington purchased 100 acres of land in lot 10 in Farmington from Nathan COMSTOCK of Farmington [Ontario County Land Records, Book 22, p. 212]."

"According to a petition of 14 April 1828 by Rhoda, widow of John GRINNELL, late of Farmington, John had died on 29 March 1828. In another petition, dated 10 February 1829, Rhoda requested that a guardian be appointed for six of their children - namely Clark, Spencer, Caroline, Ezra, Thomas, and Hiram - who were under 21 years of age. On that date the court ordered that all the heirs appear in court, naming widow Rhoda and children Morris, Joseph, Abner, John Jr., Cyrus MOORE and wife Minerva, Clark, Spencer, Rhoda, Caroline, Ezra, Thomas, and Hiram GRINNELL [Ontario County File 56; Letters of Administration, Book 19, p. 6]."
