Reason for Visit: A number of microbreweries and brewpubs have opened in recent years in western Albemarle and northern Nelson Counties, to complement the many wineries in the area. We decided to take the nascent Central Virginia Beer Trail for an afternoon of sampling.
Google Maps Street View: You would be able to see the Devils Backbone Brewing Co. in this Google Maps Street View image if indeed it had been constructed when the image was taken. It would be built in that empty lot right behind the barn-like structure with the blue roof. One can get a good impression of its impressive location at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains near the Wintergreen resort.
Logo: The logo features the encircled initials "DB" flanked by hops cones on both sides, bracketed by stalks of wheat. The name of the brewery is formed within and underlying ribbon and bar. The top is crowned by a line of Blue Ridge mountains. There is indeed a Devils Backbone along the Blue Ridge although it's down near Roanoke about eighty miles away. This seems to be the logical basis for the brewery's name, although I don't know that for sure.
Interior: This is the view of the bar at the back of Devils Backbone, showing the brewing plant through the windows lined with growlers and glasses. The interesting feature here is that the brewing takes place on two levels towering above the bar on the other side of the glass, making for an inviting scene as one sips a beer or two. The bartenders worked hard to keep up with the beverage needs of this lively crowd.
Taps: What a lovely line of tap handles of locally-brewed beer. Devils Backbone brews a number of styles with six of them available during our visit. Naturally we had to try each one of them and the brewpub gladly accommodated us with a sampler option. The red-handled tap on the far left is a guest beer from the nearby Starr Hill brewery.
