old, born in New York and is attending school.

William H. Howder is the son of John and Electa Howder. He is 20 years
old, born in New York and is an upholsterer.

Rank Out = Private. Film Number M551 roll 67. While he was enlisted the
unit served in the Defence of Washington, Bull Run, Antietam, and
Fredericksburg where William Henry Howder was killed in action.

Administration, Washington, DC. Mother's application 150197 and
certificate 112630 filed July 22, 1867.
- Documentation shows that William Henry Howder went by the name Henry.
- 1857-1861: Worked in the furniture business for M. W. Evans.
- August 18, 1861: Enrolled at Rochester, NY to serve 3 years or
duration of the war.
- September 5, 1861: Mustered into service as a Private, Company C, 26th
Infantry, NY Volunteers.
- 1861-1862: The file includes two original letters that Henry sent
while in the service, express concern with John Howder's health and
family monetary problems. Henry pointed the family to someone who owed
him money and also instructed them to sell his tools if necessary. He
also mentioned at one point that he hadn't eaten in a while and had to
scrounge food from local farmers while on campaign in the valley of
Virginia. The handwriting is very difficult to read.
- December 13, 1862: Reported killed at the battle of Fredericksburg. A
witness who supported the pension claim stated that Henry was shot
through the head, carried off the field, and buried nearby.
- 1866: Documentation submitted to justify Mother's Pension. "Before he
enlisted in the service of the United States lived with his parents and
took care of them and cared for their wants" (Mary Morrall - December 6,
1866).
