This has not been confirmed as the same Christian HOWDER. Nonetheless the rarity of the surname provides an important clue that requires further research. As additional evidence, there is a listing for Adam HOSTETTER on the same page (Christian HOWDER's father-in-law was named Adam HOUSTATER). The boundaries of Cumberland County changed considerably since this record was made. Tyrone Township is now located in Perry County, which was split from Cumberland County in 1820. The principal town in Tyrone Twp. is Green Park.

(2) Probably moved from Pennsylvania to New York between 1801 and 1804, judging by the birthplaces of his children. The family may have lived in Seneca County, New York for a few years before moving permanently to Niagara County. Christian's daughter Nancy HOWDER who was born circa 1810 listed Seneca as her place of birth on the 1875 and 1892 New York State census records.

"Christoper HOWDER purchased from the Holland Company 150 acres in 1812, one and a half miles east of Cambria Center. Adam HOUSTATER [ed.: HOWDER's father-in-law] located in 1813 near HOWDER, purchasing of him. Philip HOUSTATER, son of Adam, came with his father. His son, Alvin, is on the original homestead in Cambria."
