"HORRIBLE! Mrs. John HOWDER Probably Fatally Burned. Found Running in the Street Last Night. Enveloped in Flames — Undoubtedly the Result of Using Kerosene in Her Stove. The residents of Hill and North Transit streets were startled last evening about 8 o’clock by seeing a woman running down Transit street enveloped in flames. She fell to the ground, and by the help of bystander the fire was extinguished. The poor creature that lay writhing in agony on the ground was found to be Mrs. John HOWDER, an aged woman who resides on the corner of Hill and North Transit streets. She was picked up and taken home, medical aid was immediately summoned and Dr. KITTINGER responded. He found Mrs. HOWDER, who is 74 years of age, frightfully burned about the head, arms, chest, back, abdomen, and in fact all over her body except one leg which miraculously escaped. The burns, in many instances are very deep and the suffering is something horrible to contemplate. How the accident happened is a matter of conjecture. The house was on fire when the neighbors ran in, and but for their timely arrival the dwelling might have been burned. Around the stove was a quantity of kerosene, and on it a coffee pot with the the kerosene can sitting beside it. Evidently Mrs. HOWDER had started to build a fire using kerosene. The oil became ignited and the flames spread to her clothes, when the poor woman rushed out into the street. At the present writing Mrs. HOWDER is very low, and it is thought that her death is merely a question of time. Dr. KITTINGER stated that there was no reasonable hope of recovery at a late hour this afternoon."
