Notes

Updated February 5, 2022. Compiled by Howder (www.howderfamily.com) from the following source(s):

(1) From a family document of unknown origin (possibly by Helen Elizabeth McGAUGHY):

"Thomas Philip HULL was born in Georgia, moved with his family to North Carolina when a small boy, was reared in North Carolina, and moved to Missouri in 1855 several years before coming to Texas in 1859 locating at Wood's Post Office - then moved to Carthage, Texas in 1879. He was a member of Carthage Lodge, No. 521, AF&F Masons. He served in the U.S. Army in the Mexican War, and served as Captain in the Confederate Army during the Civil War (this information I obtained from obituary notice of his death published in the Watchman, Carthage's newspaper). He was a member of the Methodist Church for approx. 50 years, or more. Stories told to us when we were children are to the effect that there were three HULL brothers who ran away from England so they would not have to serve in the Queen's army; their ship was shipwrecked off of the coast of North Carolina. Their names were Edwin, Henry and Samuel. I believe our great grandfather was named Henry HULL. He never saw his brothers again, though there were rumors that Samuel died in New York City."

NOTE: This appears to be the classic "three brothers" story found so commonly in genealogy. It has not been confirmed independently and should probably be viewed as apocryphal.

(2) Highlights of his EXTENSIVE Military Service Record, available through the National Archives:

- Enrolled at Smithville, NC (Ft. Johnson) March 18, 1847 as a Private, Company K. (Capt. Tipton) 1st Regiment (Col. Paine) NC Volunteers (infantry) in service during the Mexican war, and honorably discharged August 7, 1848, at Smithville, NC.
- He was 5'6", had fair complexion, blue eyes and black hair. His occupation was listed as Tailor.
- For his service he received warrant No. 36913 for 160 acres, issued by Maj. Wilder of Raleigh, NC, and sold about January 27, 1849 for $96.
- He later served as a first lieutenant, Company F., 10th Regiment, Texas Cavalry, in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He mustered-in on October 31, 1861 at Taos, TX, for a period of 12 months.
- He had received a pension for his service in Mexico, but was rejected when he reapplied in 1880 "on the ground of disloyalty" (i.e., his service in the Confederate Army). He eventually regained his pension, and it was raised to $20 a month in his later years.
- He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. H. McGAUGHY in Beeville, TX, on September 23, 1911.

The Mexican Congress refuses to make Peace on any terms, and we are making preparations to start to Saint Louis; and they say that Santa Anna is at the head of thirty thousand men, but I don't know how true it is. You know more about it than we do here, for it is might little that a soldier can find out. All that we know is flying report. Direct your letters to Thomas P.
