Page 161: "Dea. Samuel CHIPMAN, son of Elder John CHIPMAN, born in Barnstable, 15th April, 1661, inherited the homestead of his father. He was a carpenter; but farming was his principal business. He kept a public house, was a retailer of spiritous liquors, a business not then held to be incompatible with the office of Deacon of the church. He was a man of good business habits, often employed as a town officer, and there were few in town who stood higher than he in public estimation. He was ordained a deacon of the church in Barnstable, Sept. 1, 1706. He married Dec. 27, 1686, Sarah, daughter of Elder Henry COBB. He died in 1723, aged 63, and his widow Sarah Jan'y 8, 1742-3, aged 79 years. Children of Dea. Samuel CHIPMAN born in Barnstable: I. Thomas... II. Samuel... III. John... IV. Abigail... V. Joseph... "Second Generation... Samuel CHIPMAN, first son of John CHIPMAN (1) was born in Barnstable, Mass., April 15, 1661; died in 1723. He resided in Barnstable, was often employed in its local affairs and was esteemed by its citizens. He built, on the paternal homestead near the Custom House the 'Chipman Tavern' which continued in the line of his posterity until 1830. He became a member of the church Aug. 16, 1691 and, as the records state, was ordained a deacon Sept. 1, 1706. Said to have been a carpenter, he was by record a 'yeoman and an innholder.' On Dec. 27, 1686 he married Sarah, twelfth child of Ru. Elder Henry COBB and his wife Sarah, of Barnstable, born March 10, 1663; died Jan. 8, 1743. Samuel CHIPMAN's will dated Aug. 31, 1722, proved June 17, 1723, mentions his wife and the children..."
