The Finger Lakes Region is amazingly beautiful. There are many different publicly accessible beaches and parks. We spent the day touring around Canandaigua Lake. Later we stopped at the north end of the lake in the town with the same name, for a little swimming and sand castle building (map).

Canandaigua Lake is one of the westernmost of the Finger Lakes. There are a few smaller lakes further west as one gets closer to Interstate 390, though. It is said that Canandaigua means “chosen spot” in the language of the Native American Iroquois who once inhabited the area. It is about 15 miles long and 1.5 miles wide, and even though it’s not nearly as large as some of the Finger Lakes such as Seneca and Cayuga it is still quite a respectable size.

We rented a space in a bed-and-breakfast which was more accurately a two-bedroom apartment on the western side of the lake. This provided a great starting point for visiting the entire western portion of the Finger Lakes Region.

In addition, there is a pretty little town just south of Canandiagua Lake called Naples that is right in the heart of the wine region (map). We enjoyed touring around the town on foot.
