Thoughts on Los Angeles and Reno

In an earlier post, 12MC noted that we can sometime confuse east and west in our geographic perceptions. A similar condition exists with Los Angeles, California and Reno, Nevada.

Los Angeles conjures up certain images. Think of beaches, surfing and movie stars living on hillsides with expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. Most of us automatically consider the “West Coast” as being, well, west.

However, the California coastline curves extensively in its southern section. Parts of the state’s waterfront actually sits further east than large chunks of Nevada. This includes the city of Reno.

I know! Crazy!

Once again, what we consider east and west in our brain gets turned on its head when natural features don’t conform to the neat lines and borders applied by humans.
