"May Eliza SCHWAB, nee KENDALL, was born at Belmont, Wisconsin, May 31, 1869 and died at Lincoln, Nebraska, February 1, 1897, aged 27 years and 8 months. She was the oldest of four children of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen KENDALL, one sister and two brothers survive her. In 1884, she came with her parents to Nebraska and settled near Sutton, where she attended the Sutton High School from which she graduated as valedictorian in 1886. On May 29, 1889, she was united in marriage to her now bereaved husband, Rev. J. G. SCHWAB, and with him until the time of her death, shared the responsibilities and triumphs of the itinerant ministry, serving for three years at Culbertson, three years at Nelson, and nearly two years as presiding elder in his conference. During these years Mrs. SCHWAB formed a large circle of acquaintances in southern Nebraska who now sincerely mourn her early departure. Decreased first made profession of faith in Christ in 1887, united with the M.E. church at Sutton. Upon her marriage she changed her church relationship to that of her husband, that of the Evangelical Association of which church she remained a faithful member until death. She was an intelligent and prayerful student of the Bible, and derived much consolation from its sacred promises. She had a deep experience in divine life. She was ever active in the Master's cause. Of her it can be truly said as on one of old, ‘She hath done what she could.’ She was especially solicitous of her children and the youth, and was in turn loved by them with undying love. At the time of her death she was recording Secretary of the Women's Missionary Society of Salem Evangelical Church in Lincoln, and also of the Capital W.C.T.U., of which she was a charter member and one of the chief promoters of its organization. She loved the work and principles of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Her whole soul was in the cause. She prayed daily for the success of temperance and purity. Her summons came suddenly. She was ill less than two weeks. The direct cause of her death was LaGrippe, which attacked her so violently that the fever seized upon her brain, causing nervous and mental derangement. She battled with this disease for just one week before death released her spirit on the evening of February 1st. All that medical skill could perform was done for her, but death scorned all these. She leaves husband and four little sons to mourn her departure. The Interment took place in the Sutton Cemetery, Thursday, February 4th. On the preceding day memorial services were held in the Evangelical Church in Lincoln, which could not accommodate the great throng of friends who came to offer their last tribute of respect. The services were very impressive. The Capital and East Lincoln Unions were present in a body. Mrs. ASH, president of the Capital Union, had charge of the services, and gave a touching eulogy on the life of the departed sister. She was followed by Mrs. BENTLEY, president of the East Lincoln Union. Mrs. F. E. MARTIN, of Elmwood, and intimate friend of the bereaved family, spoke on ‘For me to live in Christ and to die is gain.’ Phil. 1:21. The Rev. J.P. ASH and the Rev. C. E. BENTLEY and Rev. COCHRAN also took part in the services. At Sutton, Rev. J. F. ASH, a pastor of the deceased, preached from Heb. 4:9 ‘There remaineth therefore a rest for the people of God.’ Rev. H. SOHL presiding elder of Hastings District, spoke in the German language. Rev. E. H. KIEFER, of Lexington, gave a personal tribute to the memory of the lamented dead, and told what her character and counsel had been to him. Rev. A. H. ZILMER, of Nelson, and Rev. A. FISCHER, of Grand Island, also participated in the services. Other ministers present were F.H. DOESCHER, of Hastings, F. REUTLINGER, of Clay Center and C. STOCK of Sutton, and Rev. FOWLER of the M.E. church, also C. SCHWAB, of Burr Oak, Kansas, a brother of the husband of the deceased. The exercises were held in the M.E. church, which was crowded to its utmost capacity. A very large circle of relatives was present. Beautiful floral offerings were laid on the casket. The Lincoln Unions, Dr. H.L. SCHWAB, of Laramie, Wyoming, had sent a lovely design. She has gone to her rest. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints."
