Notes

Updated February 24, 2022. Compiled by Howder (www.howderfamily.com) from the following source(s):

(1) LDS Family Search call number 0901413, "Marriage records, 1831-1917; Index 1831-1919, Ohio. Probate Court (Allen County)". Microfilm of original records in the Allen County Courthouse, Lima, Ohio.

(2) 1880 United States Census for Ohio, Allen Co., Second Ward Lima: Supervisor's District 1; Enumeration District 227; page 29; June 10-11, 1880.

Mary [NUGENT] MYERS is married to Levi MYERS head of household. She is 34 years old and was born in Ohio, with his father born in Ireland and his mother born in Germany. She is keeping house. Children in the household are John, Mary, Sophia and Sarah.

(3) Sylvester family interview.

- Referenced a handwritten note on a page from a desktop calendar dated Monday, April 16, 1956: Specifically references Lima, Ohio and Memphis, Tennessee. Levi and Mary's children listed as John, Emmett, Sophia, Mercedes (Sadie); Mrs. Mary A. SYLVESTER, and Robert E. MYERS of Tennessee.
- She may have immigrated to the United States with her father; date and country of origin uncertain (government records seem to indicate that she was actually born in Ohio although her father may have immigrated from Ireland). There may also have been some sort of family tragedy when she was young that claimed the life of her mother (seems to be potentially supported by 1850 Census if we can make a connection). The family memory is rather sketchy on these points.

(4) There are a several records that imply a connection to Mary NUGENT that require further research. So far I've not been able to tie them to her definitively although they seem to make sense:

- The 1850 Census for District 6, Spencer Twp., Allen Co., Ohio lists a 4 year old child named Mary NEUGENT born in Ohio. She is the presumed daughter of John NEUGENT, a farmer, 40 years old, born in Ireland. The record incudes a presumed sibling, Sarah, age 2 but does not list anyone who could be a mother.
- A notice in the December 14 Times-Democrat newspaper in Lima, Ohio (and repeated on December 21, 1859) lists John NUGENT of Spencer Township as delinquent on his property taxes. He owns 40 acres valued at $250 and owes a total tax of $6.78. The property is "advertised for sale on the 9th day of January, A.D. 1860 (2nd Monday) for non-payment of Taxes."
- The 1860 Census for Delphal, Spencer Twp., Allen Co., Ohio lists a 14 year old girl named Mary NUGENT living with a seemingly unrelated family headed by John DEHART, a farmer. Additionally, Sarah NUGENT (the possible sister from the 1850 Census) is 11 years old and living with the Jacob DEHART family. There is no sign of John NUGENT anywhere in Allen County, Ohio.
- The 1870 Census for Ottowa Twp., Allen Co., Ohio includes an entry for the Levi and Mary MIRES family. Mary is 24 years old, born in Ohio and is keeping house. They have a 3-month old child, John. There is also Lorena MIRES, age 11, of unknown relation.
