"Thomas WALLER was born in Caven County, Ireland, on the 19th day of March, 1840, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (ARGUE) WALLER. In his childhood there were considerable religious strife in Ireland, and he well remembered his fathers house having been searched for firearms by a part of soldiers.

His people immigrated to Canada when he was five year of age, the sailing vessel taking seven weeks for the voyage from Dublin to Quebec. They settled in Prince Edward County, Ontario, and there his childhood and youngmanhood were spent. He had the benefit of the local schools until large enough to go out to work , about the age of 17 years.

Lumbering being the principal industry nearby, he took up work in the woods, and during the Civil War, when high wages were being paid in the States, he came to Michigan.

On January 14, 1865, he was married to Helen J. DICKERSON at Almont, and their married life of nearly 53 years has been spent in Lapeer and Tuscola Counties, with the exception of three years in Kansas and Illinois, about 1872 to 1875. To them were born six children, of whom three are living; George P., of Pontiac; Mrs. Maude HARBIN, of Port Hope; and Frank C., of Saginaw. Of the other three, Leslie died in Kansas in 1873; Jessie near Imlay City in 1879; and Lena in Mayville in 1888 [e.d., Lena A. Waller is buried in the family plot; Lot 520, Fremont Township Cemetery, Tuscola County, Michigan; b. 20 Mar 1882, d. 22 Jun 1888].

He was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church while living in Kansas, thus bearing relationship to the church for about 46 years. During the greater part of this time he was either a class-leader or a Steward of the church. Of his work in the local church, since coming to Mayville in 1888, there is no need to speak. His home has been here since that date, though he was absent for three or four years, while employed in Lapeer.

He was the eldest of 14 children, seven boys and seven girls; of those 5 brothers and 5 sisters survive him.

Mr. WALLER had many good friends. He was a man of generous impulses and hospitable ways. He has born sorrow and adversity bravely and enjoyed prosperity quietly. He had filled the various relations of his life as husband, father, brother, friend and filled them well. Who can do more? He was invariably a good neighbor. But he is gone and another name is stricken from the ever lessening roll of our old settlers. The grief that was felt at the announcement of his death was widespread and sincere. His best monument will be the good report he has left in the community in which he lived so many years.

The funeral was conducted at the M. E. church Tuesday afternoon by Rev. E. H. SCOTT and was largely attended. The remains were laid to rest in the Fremont cemetery."
