"After a severe illness – One of the City's Best Known Citizens Crosses the Great Divide. Lewis P. PLANT, 73 years old, died at nine o'clock Saturday evening at his home, 335 E. Washington Street. He had been seriously ill for several days with Bright's disease, and ill health caused his permanent retirement from business two years ago. Mr. PLANT’s parents were English by birth, but he was born in Akron, Ohio, the family moving to Canada while he was little more than a baby. He was 14 when they came to Ionia County, settling in Orange Township. He was married twice, his first wife being Eliza BLISS, by whom he had one child, Mrs. Eva HARTWELL of Los Angeles, Cal. His second wife was Lovina ALLEN. They were married in 1861, and had six children, three of whom are still living – Ray of Milbank S. Dakota, Mrs. Nellie COOK of East Lansing and Geo. PLANT of this city. In 1881 Mr. and Mrs. PLANT moved to Milbank, S. Dakota, where they lived until 1912. For ten years before going Mr. PLANT was a member of the Broad & Plant form here – a firm which was formed again for a short time upon his return. He was also employed by other persons here since his residence in this city. Besides his wife and children, Mr. PLANT leaves three sisters and a brother – Mrs. GATES of Oregon, Mrs. PRIEST of California, Mrs. Jane EDDY of Saranac and Moses PLANT of Lyons. Ray PLANT is expected here on Tuesday, the rest of the family being here at the time of death. The funeral was held at the residence at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. BRANCH officiating. According to the request of the deceased his burial was in Tuttle Cemetery. In Mr. PLANT’s death, Ionia loses an honest and capable business man and an excellent citizen. He was much interested in political questions, being always a staunch adherent of the Democratic Party. The funeral of Louis PLANT, at the home on E. Washington St., Wednesday P.M. was largely attended. The sermon by Mr. BRANCH was a touching tribute to manly qualities of deceased. The music was by Mrs. E. SMITH and Mrs. H.E. SPENCER. The bearers were C.C. EYSTER, G.W. FRENCH, Ed. BENNETT and Mr. RANDALL."
