- Mainland Journal; Pleasantville, New Jersey: 1914, Feb 14 (Page 5): "Under the auspices of the local W.C.T.U., on Monday evening, the 9th inst., at the People's Theatre, the Absecon Highland Dramatic Co., presented the ever-popular temperance play, 'Ten Nights in a Bar Room,' under the direction of Mr. Chas. B. BURNS... Mr. Walter M. BURNS as 'Sample Switchel' gave a laughable interpretation and his violin solos at the piano were very much appreciated."

- Press of Atlantic City; Atlantic City, New Jersey; 1929, Jun 1 (Page 1): "Mother Weeps, Judge Halts Adoption. MAYS LANDING, May 31. --Declaring that he would not permit the permanent separation of children from their mother without the latter's complete willingness to give them up, Judge William H. SMATHERS has refused to allow the adoption of Harry B. BURNS, 6, and Caretta M. BURNS, 4, of Atlantic City, by their grandmother, Carrie S. BURNS, of Absecon. The mother, Lena, wife of Walter M. BURNS, had signed a written consent to the adoption and was resigned to give up her children to her mother-in-law following the granting of a decree of nisi in divorce proceedings instituted by her husband. When she was questioned in the usual way as to whether she was willing to have the children adopted by their grandmother she hesitated in answering and Judge SMATHERS asked her why she did not reply at once. Mrs. BURNS sobbed out that a mother naturally did not want to be parted from her children. Judge SMATHERS then halted the proceedings and grilled all parties interested. He forced Mrs. Carrie BURNS, who is 77 years old, to admit that she had brought up one and is now bringing up another of her grandchildren without seeking to adopt them, but is unwilling to do as much for Harry and Caretta. They are now maintained by their father in a private school in Ventnor."
