Notes

[NI1761] Updated November 19, 2005. Compiled by Howder (www.howderfamily.com) from the following source(s):

(1) 1860 United States Census for Minnesota, Winona Co., Mt. Vernon (Mt. Vernon Post Office): Page 3; June 7, 1860.

Stephen M. Burns (listed as "Barnes") is head of household, married to Mary A. [Jordan] Burns. He is 42 years old, a farmer with real estate valued at $1,800 and personal estate valued at $300, and was born in Pennsylvania. Children in the household are Charlotte C., Stephen W., and Albert C.

(2) LDS FamilySearch 1880 United States Census database for District 74, Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA. Family History Library Film 1251169, NA Film Number T9-1169, Page 48C.

Stephen M. Burns is listed as 62 years old and born in Pennsylvania. His father is listed as having been born in Pennsylvania and his mother in England. He is head of household, a paper hanger, and married to Sarah Burns (his second wife?). His son Charles B. Burns is a resident as is a servant, Elizabeth Hibberd.

Thus, by 1880, he had moved from Minnesota back to his original hometown, Philadelphia.

(3) 1900 United States Census for Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Co., Philadelphia City: Ward 32; Supervisor's District 1; Enumeration District 813; Sheet 1B; June 1, 1900.

Stephen M. Burns is head of household, which he shares with his daughter, Charlotte C. [Burns] Sylvester. The Census record is in poor condition and extremely difficult to read. What little can be read is that he was born June 1816 in Pennsylvania.

(4) Hughes family records. February 6, 2001.

- Originally from Philadelphia, PA.
- Traveled to Minnesota with his wife and three children around 1855.
