Notes
Updated April 9, 2026. Compiled by Howder (www.howderfamily.com) from the following source(s):(1) Stephenson, J.C., The Stephenson Family. Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States, self-published, 1906.
Page 16-17 and 21: Sarah STEPHENSON's parents were Hugh W. STEPHENSON (b. Ireland 1765) and Margaret STEPHENSON. Her parents were cousins, thus the same surname. Her grandparents were William STEPHENSON and R. Green BEATTIE. Her great grandfather was Robert STEPHENSON.
Page 22: "In 1794 Hugh W. STEPHENSON moved from York County, South Carolina, to Smith County, Tennessee; thence in 1806 to Maury County, Tennessee; and in 1819 all the family, married and single, moved to Lawrence County, Alabama. They bought land and settled near where the town of Mount Hope now is, about thirty miles south of the foot of the Muscle Shoals, on Tennessee River."
Page 21: "Sallie R., born August 12, 1807, in Tennessee." Logically this would have been in Maury County, where the family was living at the time. She would have moved with the family to Alabama when she was about 12 years old.
Page 21: Her siblings were: "Ann, born July 13, 1788, in South Carolina. William Watson, born October 28, 1790, in South Carolina. Elizabeth, born August 13, 1792, in South Carolina. Mary M., born February 9, 1795, in Tennessee. John Campbell, born August 28, 1797, in Tennessee. Pleasant Wright, born June 9, 1800, in Tennessee. Hodge Lawson, born June 30, 1802, in Tennessee... Finis Ewing, born November 2, 1811, in Tennessee."
Page 84: "Sallie R. STEPEHNSON, the eighth child and fourth daughter of Hugh W. STEPHENSON and Margaret, his wife, married Ellison McGAUGHEY. They reared a family near Mount Hope [Alabama]. Sallie died. Ellison married Miss Lively LITTLE and went to Marshall County, Mississippi. I think the family are all dead."

"1829 Oct. 2, McGAUGLEY, Sam'l. + STEPHENSON, Sarah. Married by John C. STEPHENSON." Note: the ceremony was probably performed by Rev. John Campbell STEPHENSON (Sarah's brother), a Cumberland Presbyterian minister in New Hope, Alabama.
