Includes an obituary of unknown origin: "Cora, Oretta, daughter of William and Keziah BALLOU, was born March 4, 1871 at Clarence, Iowa in Cedar County and passed away at her home in Dows, November 2, 1939, being 68 years, 7 months and 29 days of age. At the age of two she came with her parents by covered wagon to Wright County, settling on a farm one and one half miles east of Galt where she spent her early childhood, moving later to Galt where she completed her schooling. On December 25, 1888, she was united in marriage to John M STATE. They established their home on a farm near Galt and lived there for thirty-four years. This union was blessed with 13 children. Early in life she joined the Congregational Church at Galt, where she was a faithful and untiring worker for many years. After moving to Dows in 1922, she transferred her membership to the Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society. For many years she was a loyal member of the WCTU. She was never too busy to lend a helping hand to those in need. On December 25, 1938, Mr. and Mrs. State celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary. For this occasion, all the children were present. Her failing health was the only sad part of this reunion. She was able to be about and perform many of her usual duties until August 12, when she suffered a slight stroke of paralysis. From this date she gradually grew weaker, until she went to join her Maker, whom she loved so well."
