"Capt. John Barker of Dresden, Maine, a seafaring man, who was captured by a British press gang, and refusing to enter the royal navy, was sent to prison in London. Upon his return to the United States, during the war of 1812, he received a commission from the government, took command of a privateer, and captured seven British vessels before the close of hostilities. He was often heard to remark that he had 'paid off old scores with interest.'"
