"Killed in Italy. Mr. and Mrs. P. A. GUSE, 305 York St., Beaver Dam, received a message from the Secretary of War this morning, advising them that their son, Pfc. Roger A. GUSE, aged 23, had been killed in Italy on Aug. 5th. Pfc. GUSE enlisted in the service in April of 1942, and had been overseas for several months. While in this country he had received his training at Fort Sheridan, Ill.; Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland; Rice, Calif., and at Camp Young, Calif. Roger would have been 24..."

"MEMORIAL SERVICE... Pvt. First Class Roger A. GUSE U.S.A., killed in action in August 1944... Capt. John F. HENNESSEY, somewhere in Italy, has written to Mr. and Mrs. P. GUSE of Beaver Dam, dated Dec. 5th, of the accidental death of their son, Roger GUSE, which occured in Italy several months ago as follows: It is my deepest feeling of sympathy that I write this letter to you. I fully realize the shock it must have been to you upon the receipt of the notice of Roger's death, as it was a shock to the men of the Company and myself here. I would have written sooner but Army regulations forbid. The reason being to save any possible mistake and embarrassment. The War Department requires we wait a specified time to enable them to properly verify the report of death and to notify persons concerned before they hear from any other source. Roger's accident could have happened to anybody, any place where there are motor vehicles. It is not known just how it happened, because he was alone at the time. It is reasonably assured from investigation and upon consideration of the rate of speed we must gain over here at this time that he lost control of his vehicle and failed to make a turn in the road. At the time he was returning from a regular duty. It was surprising to us because he was considered a very capable and careful driver. Although he was only with my Company a few months he performed his duty as a true American soldier and gained the confidence and friendship of everyone whom he contacted in the Company and we liked him very much. His burial was a simple military type given to all deceased soldiers here. All his records have been properly accomplished and personal property sent through channels which you will eventually receive. I sincerely hope this letter will help to comfort you in some of the things you hadn't previously known. You can at some future date get information from the War Department as to the location of the grave. All I can tell you is it is in central Italy."
