(16) Smith family records; September 27, 2012.

"Amherst, and at least one of his brothers, Augustus H BARBER, were land surveyors in Clark County, Wisconsin. Augustus drowned In Lake Superior while surveying for the government. Amherst went on later to live in Yankton, Dakota Territory, where he set up the school system. It was there that he was given an assignment by the Government Land Office to do some surveying in Colorado. Apparently, several congressmen were selling (sometimes multiple times) land that either did not exist or was not otherwise sale-able with the help of some crooked surveyors in CO. There was a big scandal in Washington from this."
