"Jacob HAESSIG, Aged Pioneer, Dies Suddenly. Prominent Resident Here for Nearly 60 Years Succumbs Thursday, March 15. EIGHT-FIVE YEARS OF AGE. Native of Alsace Came to America and Took Up Farming -- Interred at Woodland. Jacob HAESSIG, one of the oldest and best liked citizens of this community, passed away at his home in this city last Thursday morning, March 15. About four years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and has since been an invalid, unable to get about without assistance. He was eighty-five years of age and had been resident of this section for nearly sixty years. Mr. HAESSIG was born January 6, 1838, at Eausenhausen, Alsace, France, where he lived until twenty-three years of age when he decided to come to America. He received his education in the village school there. When he was fifteen years old, his parents both died, he made his way by working on farms and vineyards. In March, 1861, he landed in New York City and came west to Cleveland O., where he remained but a few months and then went west to Elkhart, Indiana, where he did farm work for two years. He came to Wabasha in the spring of 1863, purchasing a farm in Whitewater township, which he sold two years later and bought another farm in Plainview township. In his forty years of residence on this farm, he added to it until he at one time owned 240 acres. The Elgin cyclone of 1863 damaged his farm buildings to some extent. About eighteen years ago he disposed of his farm in Woodland and came to Plainview where he continued to live until his death. He was united in marriage to Mrs. Franklin SYLVESTER on March 26, 1869. His wife preceded him in death fifteen years ago. Mr. HAESIG was the father of four children, viz: Mrs. W. T. LEA, Plainview; H. L. HAESIG, Winona; Miss Ida, who cared for him during his illness; and a son who died in infancy. In the past few years the sound of his deep heavy voice with its pleasant jovial greeting has been greatly missed by his many friends and his removal from this world has been deeply felt. Funeral services were held at the home on Saturday afternoon by Rev. William WOOLLEY of the M. E. church, and interment made in the Woodland cemetery, where the Odd Fellow lodge members took charge, deceased having been a member of that lodge for years."

(11) The History of Wabasha County [MN], Chicago: Hill and Company, 1884 (reprinted) pages 1127-1128; biography of Jacob Haessig.

"JACOB HAESSIG is a well-to-do farmer of Plainview township. He was born in Alsace, Europe, January 6, 1838, on a farm twelve miles west of Worth. John HAESSIG, his father, was a farmer and shepherd. Our subject received the customary education provided by the German common school system. In 1859, Alsace was French territory, and Napoleon III called upon her for her quota of soldiers for the Austrian war. A draft was ordered, but Mr. HAESSIG was lucky enough to escape it, and two years later came to America, where he first found employment in the American House, at Cleveland, Ohio. He remained there but a few months, and then went to Elkhart, Indiana, where he did farm work until the autumn of 1863, when he came to Minnesota, and bought a farm of eighty acres in Whitewater township, Winona county, from Judge MITCHELL. In 1865 he bought John W. STUDEBAKER's place in Plainview township, Wabasha County, and took up his residence thereon. He has since disposed of his Winona county farm, and now owns two hundred and forty acres of rich farming land, all in the township of Plainview. He was married March 26, 1869 to the widow of Franklyn SYLVESTER, a pioneer of 1855, by whom he has had three children: Helen E., Ida W. and Lafayette H. Mrs. HAESSIG had three children by her first husband, as follows: Jennie (Mrs. SKIDMORE), of Spink County, [now South] Dakota; Emma B. (Mrs. Cornelious BADGER), of Waseca, Minnesota, and Arthur C. SYLVESTER, fireman on the Winona and St. Peter railroad. The Elgin cyclone of 1883 did some damage to Mr. HAESSIG's farm buildings. Politically and socially Mr. HAESSIG has been quite popular, being a worthy member of Plainview Lodge, I. O. O. F. I., and was elected by the democratic party county commissioner in 1878, and served three years."
