- Morrell Bishop SMITH was born November 1, 1911, the only child of Lena BELL SMITH and Marvin SMITH, near Troup and the East Texas rural community of Blackjack on November 1, 1911.
- Upon the death of his mother when he was 13 years old, he was sent to Claremore, Oklahoma to be near his paternal aunt and to attend the Oklahoma Military Academy.
- He later graduated from Texas A+M University and briefly taught agriculture at the Carthage High School.
- He volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army during three wars (World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam) and became a captain and commander of Company E at the 1950s point of embarkation, Camp Stoneman.
