"Wholesale Discharge of Central Railroad Conductors. The New York Central and Hudson River railroad company began the new year by a sweeping change in the personnel of the conductors of its passenger trains. A large portion of these conductors all along the line from New York to Buffalo received notifications of dismissal. These unwelcome new year's presents were very short, no reason was given and no explanation made. It is understood, however, that the officials, many of whom have occupied their positions for long terms, had failed either from inability or want of inclination to comply with the regulations of the company in the matter of duplex tickets... The duplex tickets led to so much delay that they were either obliged to neglect the matter in the case of some passengers or else they did not get through their trains before reaching a station... He therefore put Pinkerton's detectives on the trains with orders to report all conductors who did not strictly follow instructions... Of the conductors in charge of trains running out of Rochester, the following have been displaced: ... Niagara Falls -- James LORD... The conductors in the above list have been extremely popular with the traveling public, and their removal has elicited very general expressions of regret."
