(1) Bouvé, Thomas Tracy, et al. Lincoln, G. Hingham genealogies. Published by the Town of Hingham, 1893. Pages 15-16.

Page 15-16: "THOMAS LINCOLN, 'Husbandman.' 1. THOMAS, styled 'the husbandman,' and bro. of Stephen LINCOLN, came from Wymondham in the County of Norfolk, Eng., and settled in our Hing. in the autumn of 1638. His name frequently occurs up the early rec's of the town, and in every instance he is distinguished from the other Thomases by his occupation. His conveyances and titles to property acquired either by grant or purchase, also afford evidence of his vocation in life. None of his descendants bearing the surname in the male line reside in Hing. at the present time. They are, however, quite numerous throughout New England, and not difficult to connect with those who removed into Worcester County, and to the State of Maine. His w. was Margaret, dau. of Richard LANGER. She outlived him, and d. in Hing. 5 March, 1693-94. He d. 16 Aug. 1692. In his will, made 24 May, 1681, names w. and eight ch. 'Farmer.' Selectman 1662, 1669, and 1672. Resided on Fort Hill St., 'on the upland by the highway side going to Weymouth mill.' Ch., all b. or bt. in Hing., were --- ... Caleb [d. young]... Joshua... Caleb... Susanna, Aug. 16, 1646. m. May 16, 1666, Joseph BARSTOW of Scit... Mary... Sarah... Thomas... Daniel... Elizabeth... Ephraim... Ruth..."

Thomas LINCOLN's mother was named Joan. There is no information on his father. Joan is referenced in the will of Thomas' brother, Stephen. From page 476: "my mother Joan LINCOLN, son Stephen LINCOLN, and Susanna LINCOLN, the daughter of my brother Thomas LINCOLN the husbandman."

There were multiple Thomas LINCOLNs living in the area who are referred to by occupation in order to tell them apart: Thomas the Cooper or Maltster; Thomas the Husbandman; Thomas the Miller; and Thomas the Weaver. This one is Thomas the Husbandman -- a husbandman was a free tenant farmer or small landowner.

"Thomas LINCOLN, immigrant ancestor, was from Wymondham, county Norfolk, England. He was a brother of Stephen LINCOLN, and with a number of others of the name, ancestors of all the American LINCOLNs of Colonial ancestry, settled in Hingham, Massachusetts. His mother Joan was one of the party of colonists. There were in this remarkable LINCOLN colony at Hingham no less than four of the name of Thomas LINCOLN, and the pioneers found it convenient to distinguish them by the names of their trades... Besides these we find Daniel LINCOLN, seaman and sergeant; Samuel LINCOLN, progenitor of President Abraham LINCOLN; and Stephen LINCOLN, brother of Thomas LINCOLN, husbandman. Wymondham, or Windham, was probably the birthplace of Stephen and Thomas, but they were closely connected with the others of the name who came to Hingham, New England, from Hingham, England... The designation 'husbandman' was found necessary in all records and legal papers, such as deeds and grants of land... He married Margaret, daughter of Richard LANGER. In his will dated February 20, 1659, LANGER bequeaths all the land in Hingham, New England, which he bought of his son-in-law, Thomas LINCOLN, and land at Great Rock and Conihasset he gave to his daughter Margaret's son Joshua LINCOLN. Margaret died at Hingham, March 5, 1693-94. Mr. LINCOLN died August 1692. His will was dated May 24, 1681; bequeathing to his wife and eight children."

Hist. and Gen. Register, 1860.

"1638. Steven LINCOLN and his wife and his son Steven, came from Windham, and settled in New Hingham... Thomas LINCOLN and Jeremiah MOORE came from Windham, and settled in New Hingham...All the persons above named that came over in the year 1638, were 133, came in one ship called the Diligent of Ipswich; the master was John MARTIN of said Ipswich."
