"Nathaniel, the father of Harry, was born in Vermont in 1785. In the year 1800, at the age of twenty-one, he penetrated into the wilds of of Jefferson County in quest of game, and was engaged for several years in hunting, fishing, etc. During this time he selected a fine spot for his future home in the present town of Rodman. In the year 1808 he was married to Miss Diana EDMUNDS, daughter of Judge EDMUNDS, of Jefferson County. Soon after his marriage he built a log house on his location, and commenced clearing up the farmon which he ever afterwards resided. He at first owned 100 acres, but by subsequent purchases he increased it to 300 acres. He became the father of of nine children named as follows: Sally, Betsey, Electa, Ruth, Eri, Riley, Nathaniel, Harry, and Franklin. Of these, three sons and two daughters are at this time living and have families. Mr. Nathaniel HARRINGTON died, at the advanced age of eighty-five year, in 1870. "Nathanial HARRINGTON, father of Benjamin F[ranklin] HARRINGTON, was born in Clarendon, Vermont, March 14, 1785. During the early years of the nineteenth century, he penetrated into the wilds of Jefferson county, New York, in quest of game, and was engaged for several years in hunting and fishing, and during this time he selected a spot for his future home in the present town of Rodman. In 1806 he located on the land, which is still in the possession of the family, then consisting one one hundred acres, to which he afterwards added until his possessions amounted to about two hundred and seventy acres. He cleared the farm, which was then in a state of complete wilderness, and during all this period experienced the privations incident to a pioneer life. He made his way home from Rome to this section of the state by means of marked trees, and for several years was about the only settler. He was successful in his operations; was recognized as a man of means in his day, and was always a firm champion of the rights of the people. He served several years as county commissioner, filling the duties with promptness and efficiency. In early manhood he cast his vote with the Democratic party, but later transferred his allegiance to the opposing faction, the Republican party. He served in the War of 1812, participating at the battle of Sacketts Harbor, and while he was preparing for his service his wife was moulding bullets; he was one of the pensioners of that war. For over thirty years he was an active member and a liberal contributor to the State Road Baptist church, of Adams."

"Nathanial HARRINGTON married Diana EDMONDS, July 4, 1808. She was born in 1789, a daughter of Eliphalet EDMONDS, a native of Vermont, whence he migrated to the vicinity of Boonville, New York, later coming to Jefferson county, where he served as judge of the county for many years. Nine children were the issue of this marriage, eight of whom attained years of maturity, namely: Sally, born in 1809, became the wife of Howard BEARD, a cooper of Rodman, later a merchant, and for several years a justice of the peace. Betsey, born October 24, 1810, became the wife of Daniel FOX, second, a carpenter of Adams Center. Eri, born April 1, 1813, a resident of Adams, New York, having attained the advanced age of ninety-one years. Electa, born April 23, 1815, became the wife of Volney AYERS, a farmer of Adams. Riley, born September 27, 1820, a farmer, died December 30, 1862. Nathaniel, born August 5, 1822, died at the age of twenty-two years. Harry, born September 16, 1824, a farmer of Rodman, and Benjamin F. mentioned herinafter ['born on the farm in Rodman, where he now resides, May 18, 1827']. The father of these children died June 4, 1870; he survived his wife many years, her death occurring June 4, 1854."

(15) "Nathaniel Harrington House in Rodman": Watertown (NY) Daily Times; November 29, 1952.

"Seven miles from this city on the Dry Hill road is this large farm house, the upright and lower part of the east wing of which are said to have been built in 1816 by Nathaniel HARRINGTON, a pioneer Rodman settler. Modernizations and additions have destroyed its original simple beauty, but it bears the distinction of never having been out of possession of the Harington family in its 136 years and to have been lived in by five generations of Harringtons. With its 255 acres and herd of 60 thoroughbred Holstein cattle it is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. HARRINGTON and occupied by them and their son, Hollis Edwin HARRINGTON..."

"Born at Clarendon, Vt., March 14, 1785, son of Caleb and Sally Perry HARRINGTON, Nathaniel HARRINGTON used to come to hunt and fish in the wilderness of Jefferson county early in the last century. As a result, in 1806 he selected the section in which he wanted to settle down, served in the War of 1812 battle of Sackets Harbor and on Feb. 12, 1814 bought from Caleb and Sarah HARRINGTON for $500 the 93-acre and ten rods parcel of land which formed the nucleus of this farm and upon which this house is said to have been built two years later. On May 12, 1815 he purchased 74.9 acres from HARISON + HOFFMAN, and on Jan. 28, 1819 two parcels of 50 and 35.25 acres plus from Benjamin and Azubah FASSETT. In politics he was first a Democrat, later years served as county commissioner."

"In coming to this section he followed a line of marked trees up from Rome. On July 4, 1808 he married Diana, daughter of Eliphalet EDMONDS, also a Vermont native who came first to Boonville and then to this county. Mrs. Diana EDMONDS HARRINGTON died on June 4, 1854 and her husband on June 4, 1870. Next in line of ownership of the farm was their son, Benjamin Franklin HARRINGTON, born May 18, 1827... On Jan. 22, 1852 he married Miss Jennette A. Sweet. His death occurred June 3, 1920 and the third HARRINGTON then to come into possession of the farm was his son, Ellano. Ellano, son of Benjamin F. and Jennette SWEET HARRINGTON, was born Jan. 15, 1855 and died on March 26, 1923, but on Oct. 16, 1920 he and his wife, Susan P. HARRINGTON conveyed the homestead farm to their son and daughter-in-law, Frank E. and Ruth W. BIRD HARRINGTON, the present owners."
