"COBB, DANIEL, came from Gorham, Me., about 1778. He d. Sept. 2, 1834, a. 79. He m. int. Oct. 5, 1776, Molly BROWN, she d. Dec. 1, 1822, a 72. They are buried in the Reuben Keene cemetery without headstones except common rocks. At the time of his coming he was a young man of about 23 years of age. He settled on a lot about a mile above Esq. PEIRCEs on the east side of Crooked River in the thick pine woods where his son Wm. G. was born Oct. 14, 1779, the first male child born in Otisfield. At that time the Indians were prowling about, fishing up and down the river and hunting in the woods and Mrs. COBB, being left much alone, was afraid of them, so on that account, Mr. COBB left the place, which he probably had not bought, and settled on Bell Hill on the N.W. corner of lot 93, which he bought of Micah WHITNEY Jan. 16, 1784 for 6 pounds. He sold it, together with the N.E. half of lot 94, to Johnson KNIGHT, Feb. 9, 1794 for $900. On Mar. 22, 1810, he and his son Wm. G. bought of John PHILLIPS Jr. for $303, lot 5 range 6, Phillips Gore 101 acres between Thompson Pond and the western line of said Gore. Mr. COBB moved to Bell Hill in 1781 or before and had the first grist of rye ground in David RAYs grist mill. He moved down near Thompson Pond where his son Wm. G. and grandson Jonathan afterwards lived and died there. By those who knew him well, Mr. COBB was regarded as a conscientious and sincere Christian man. It was his custom to visit the public schools, where he offered prayer and gave the children wholesome advice. The following incident is not intended to discredit or detract in any manner from his piety. One day he was at Mrs. Johnson KNIGHTs at about the hour of noon. It was Fast Day and some of the boys were asking their mother about dinner, when she replied that it was Fast Day, and they must not eat. Mr. COBB who was hungry, then spoke up and said it was not intended to go without eating, but we ought to fast from our sins and let the oppressed go free. So he got his dinner. Daniel COBB bought of Benj. GREEN, Apr. 11, 1794, for 60 pounds, lot 74. Children: Daniel born Aug. 7, 1777, in Gorham, d. Dec. 16, 1859. Wm. Gorham born Oct. 14, 1779, d. June 2, 1850. Molly born Sept. 5, 1781, d. Dec. 24, 1803. Jonathan born May 27, 1784, d. Nov. 9, 1864. Andrew born Jan. 31, 1787. Hannah born May 11, 1789. Rachel born Dec. 10, 1792, d. Dec. 28, 1803."
