"HORRIBLE! Mrs. John HOWDER Probably Fatally Burned. Found Running in the Street Last Night. Enveloped in Flames. Undoubtedly the Result of Using Kerosene in Her Stove. The residents of Hill and North Transit streets were startled last evening about 8 o'clock by seeing a woman running down Transit street enveloped in flames. She fell to the ground, and by the help of bystander the fire was extinguished. The poor creature that lay writhing in agony on the ground was found to be Mrs. John HOWDER, an aged woman who resides on the corner of Hill and North Transit streets. She was picked up and taken home, medical aid was immediately summoned and Dr. KITTINGER responded. He found Mrs. HOWDER, who is 74 years of age, frightfully burned about the head, arms, chest, back, abdomen, and in fact all over her body except one leg which miraculously escaped. The burns, in many instances are very deep and the suffering is something horrible to contemplate. How the accident happened is a matter of conjecture. The house was on fire when the neighbors ran in, and but for their timely arrival the dwelling might have been burned. Around the stove was a quantity of kerosene, and on it a coffee pot with the kerosene can sitting beside it. Evidently Mrs. HOWDER had started to build a fire using kerosene. The oil became ignited and the flames spread to her clothes, when the poor woman rushed out into the street. At the present writing Mrs. HOWDER is very low, and it is thought that her death is merely a question of time. Dr. KITTINGER stated that there was no reasonable hope of recovery at a late hour this afternoon."

"MRS. ELECTA A. HOWDER. Mrs. Electa A. HOWDER, who was fatally burned Monday night at her home on the corner of Hill and North Transit streets, died last night shortly before 8 o'clock. Deceased was a relict of the late John HOWDER, and was one of the city's oldest residents. She was aged 74 years. A daughter living in Milwaukee, Mich. [sic.], is left to mourn her loss. Neighbors and sympathizing friends are made sad by the untimely ending of one in their midst. Unconsciousness relieved her of all knowledge of pain several hours before her death. The funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p. m., at 141 Green street, and the remains will be interred in Glenwood Cemetery."

"MRS. E.A. HOWDER. Mrs. Electa Angeline HOWDER was born in Norwich, N. Y., July 20th, 1814. She was the daughter of William and Polly WARREN. She was married to John HOWDER of Cambria, N. Y. at Lockport, March 1st, 1838. She had three children; two sons namely Truman A. and Wm. Henry HOWDER, and Emma Jane, now wife of Mr. William KINGSTON of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, keeper of the Lapeer light house. Both sons are dead, both were killed in the rebellion, one was killed and the other died at home. Mrs. HOWDER's brother, Wm. WARREN, lives or lived at Saginaw, Michigan. She also had a sister, Caroline, wife of Abner WARREN, whose residence is unknown. Another sister, Mrs. Emeline SHEFEFER, lived at Ransomville, N. Y., and died at Lockport at Mrs. HOWDER's home about July 4, 1887. Mrs. Adeline PETERS, another sister, lives in Petersville, Wisconsin. Those who knew Mrs. HOWDER best in the latter years of her life, and especially after the death of Mr. HOWDER know that her memory was often very faulty, and so perhaps there are many mistakes in the above statements. I only assume to have given them as they were given to me, and hope those interested will pardon and rectify them where they are wrong."
