"Yesterday afternoon as the town bell was ringing for one o'clock, it suddenly changed it tone to that of an alarm of fire, and the alarm spread quite extensively, arousing the fire department and citizens generally and bringing out the engines... At one time twelve different buildings were on fire, the most of them on Gage street... A place was burned on the roof of George W. SYLVESTER's house about four feet square; this house caught twice... In all of these cases the fire was expeditiously extinguished."

"Mr. Geo. W. SYLVESTER, one of our oldes and most respected citizens died on Tuesday, aged 79 years. Mr. SYLVESTER has been a resident of Augusta since 1835, was at one time clerk of the old Kennebec House, and is well remembered by our older inhabitants. The funeral of the deceased will occur at his late residence on Gage street at 3 o'clock P. M. to-day."
