While other evidence is lacking, there was someone named John Drury WHITNEY registered to vote in Placer County, California in 1867. He is listed as 23 years old, a farmer and from Maine. That would be a match on approximate year of birth, occupation and general birthplace. Could our John Drury WHITNEY have tried his luck in California in the years immediately following the Civil War, and have returned to Maine and gotten married by the 1870 Census?

The children listed in the household are: Frank D.; Minerva B; and Charles L. Additionally, John WHITNEY's widowed mother, Dorcas [DRURY] WHITNEY is also a resident.
