I&#8217;ll combine that with a couple of my recent discoveries and voil\u00e0, instant article. I&#8217;m not sure if I&#8217;m feeling lazy or if I&#8217;m still in a food coma from the recent Thanksgiving holiday but either way, prepare yourself for another installment of Odds and Ends. Either the developer is a huge football fan or he&#8217;s come up with a great marketing technique. Imagine the hordes of rabid followers of a particular team that would be attracted to specific properties for instant bragging rights. I suppose the strategy could backfire in off-years but it would be great during winning streaks. Here are some of the more interesting street names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Qwa Qwa Stars Rd.<\/li><li>Kaizer Chiefs Rd.<\/li><li>Real Rovers St.<\/li><li>Moroka Swallows Rd.<\/li><li>African Wanderers Rd.<\/li><li>Orlando Pirates Rd.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine the conversation: &#8220;<em>Yes, I live at 123 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandopiratesfc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Orlando Pirates<\/a> Road, you know, the one named for the team that defeated the Black Leopards 3-1 at Mbombela Stadium to win the 2011 Nedbank Cup?&#8230;<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving along to another topic, the recent article called <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=9656\">No, Not That One<\/a> seemed to have struck a chord with the 12MC audience. Many people posted examples of minor inconsequential towns sharing names with famous cities. I have one more. I&#8217;d like to note for the record that <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ZeKqtF1X4EHJ6WSS9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">London, Kentucky<\/a> is the home of the <a href=\"https:\/\/chickenfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">world chicken festival<\/a>. Take that, London, England! I actually kind-of want to attend the festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, I received a visitor from <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/SXr2gk2HQte6RjBBA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Iqaluit, Nunavut<\/a> earlier this week. I have nothing more to add to this other than it&#8217;s only the third visit I&#8217;ve ever received from Nunavut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We Know, but We Were Here First<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Steve from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctmq.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Connecticut Museum Quest<\/a> &#8212; one of my favorite must-read blogs even though I live nowhere near Connecticut &#8212; wondered if I had a page devoted to &#8220;unfortunately named places.&#8221; He&#8217;d like to nominate Swastika, Ontario (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/4upR1ubRy1bBrMPV9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rorvlyt\/9397360188\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2846\/9397360188_3d498a5d07.jpg\" alt=\"Swastika History. Photo by R Orville Lyttle; (CC BY-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, that would certainly place high on any list of unfortunately named places. The residents of Swastika argue that their usage dates back decades prior to any negative connotation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swastika,_Ontario\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikipedia notes<\/a>: &#8220;<em>The town was named after the Swastika Gold Mine staked in the autumn of 1907&#8230; During World War II the provincial government sought to change the town&#8217;s name to Winston in honour of Winston Churchill, but the town refused&#8230;<\/em>&#8221; It goes back to an earlier connotation, the good luck associated with a Sanskrit swastika, which seems to make sense for a gold mine. Still, sometimes people need to know when it&#8217;s time to let go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Still Lost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/27942143462\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7418\/27942143462_6ddda09e72_b.jpg\" alt=\"Michigan's Lost Peninsula. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jim C. provided a great set of photos that I posted a couple of years ago on <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=2883\">Michigan&#8217;s Lost Peninsula<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/TsaKtFuPew2rqEm48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). He sent a message this morning to inform me that the Lost Peninsula is the subject of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent article in the Detroit Free Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a human-interest piece timed to coincide with the Michigan vs. Ohio State (American) football game. I got a sense of d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu, though. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/shows\/how-the-states-got-their-shapes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How the States Got Their Shapes<\/a> used a similar premise to discuss the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toledo_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Toledo War<\/a>. It left me with the feeling that a certain reporter for the Detroit Free Press watches the History Channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back and Forth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d5981.258837881559!2d-81.741757!3d41.44726200000001!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1619609576748!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This one doesn&#8217;t show up well in Google Maps so you&#8217;ll have to trust me when I say that it represents an unusual situation. Greg drove along Interstate 71 in an area where Cleveland and neighboring Brooklyn share a particularly squiggly border. The Ohio Department of Transportation placed a sign at each municipal crossing so that travels can see shifts between Cleveland and Brooklyn five different times in the space of a quarter-mile, including two signs just a few feet apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It reminded me of the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=2618\">crazy (albeit unsigned) crossings<\/a> between Kentucky and West Virginia on U.S. Route 52\/119. It also shows that city planners and highway engineers don&#8217;t always use the same criteria when laying down their lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uh huh huh huh&#8230; You said&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My wife isn&#8217;t happy that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0105950\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beavis and Butt-head<\/a> is back on television after a 14 year hiatus. Nonetheless, I&#8217;ll present some recent finds from Alger that I believe fit the spirit of this momentous event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/rHLyHY3rJ6agAUED8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A descriptive road in Maine<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/dukyGsYEPZpA9uXA9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Another in Wisconsin<\/a>.<\/li><li>Not to be outdone by <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/o8WFSnPBvM7xtvt16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one in Oregon<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep your suggestions coming &#8212; you might find yourself included in the next installment of Odds and Ends!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The mailbag runneth over with great finds and suggestions from the generous readers of the Twelve Mile Circle audience.
