Our reader even provided a copy of an 1885 map for the online Library of Congress collection, which I&#8217;ve excerpted below. He theorized that the street name may have been a placeholder. The residents probably never called it Damfino in reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/san_antonio_1885_detail.jpg\" alt=\"Damfino Street in San Antonio. Excerpt from an 1885 map of San Antonio in the Public Domain.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d identify the reader more precisely but I don&#8217;t like to post personal information on the Internet without permission. If the contributor would like to post a comment I&#8217;d gladly give credit where credit it due, especially considering all the fun I had with this topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1626435705760!6m8!1m7!1siiuh1t0E-RloWliUu0qwWA!2m2!1d29.42338700393178!2d-98.48615942217177!3f351.62465116290883!4f1.3638993909435442!5f1.9587109090973311\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Damfino would have been on the block just south of the Alamo, adjacent to the grounds of St. Joseph&#8217;s Catholic Church, and running through a corner of the present-day parking lot. The church is a bit of a <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=4399\">spike property<\/a> that never sold-out, and now finds itself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/news\/religion\/article\/St-Joseph-s-church-evokes-its-German-past-919646.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">surrounded by a shopping mall<\/a>. I get to San Antonio on business <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=1533\">every once in awhile<\/a> and I look forward checking out the remnants of Damfino on my next trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other interesting aspect our tipster mentioned is that the International Buster Keaton Society <a href=\"https:\/\/www.busterkeaton.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">calls its members the Damfinos<\/a>. The San Antonio reference actually predates that. I knew none of this until I received the email so I considered it a fine learning experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plenty More<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>That got me thinking. Are there other geographical Damfinos? I could say &#8220;damn if I know,&#8221; but that would be all sorts of wrong. The answer is yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d1052.401645429716!2d-121.79410600000001!3d48.955062!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1626436081909!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/geonames.usgs.gov\/pls\/gnispublic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Board on Geographic Names<\/a> lists several of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/AvASP3LdYyY5sgoQ8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damfino Canyon<\/a> in Coconino Co., Arizona<\/li><li>Two spots in Jackson Co., Colorado; <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/AvASP3LdYyY5sgoQ8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damfino Park<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/AvASP3LdYyY5sgoQ8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damfino Ditch<\/a><\/li><li>Likewise in Whatcom Co., Washington; <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/WZox7BDzbuTMrnGX8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damfino Creek<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/2dT9QZ8tc1DtD4Lf7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damfino Lakes<\/a>. One can even take the U.S. Forest Service&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/mbs\/recarea\/?recid=17552\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damfino Lakes Trail<\/a><\/li><li>Finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/cdujKAGEfUwPMbLLA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damfino Creek<\/a> in Carbon Co., Wyoming<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There used to be an &#8220;old trading-point&#8221; &#8212; too small to be an actual town I suppose &#8212; named Damfino in Jasper Co., Missouri. The location seemed to be about <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/1NyaPqaaT2UCjt1WA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">six miles south of Carthage<\/a>. I couldn&#8217;t find the exact spot although the website of the <a href=\"https:\/\/shsmo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">State Historical Society of Missouri<\/a> mentions it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Florida is a particularly odd situation, with a strange concentration of street names using variations on the theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/31amgem8Rmea3LjWA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damifino Road<\/a> at the Peace River Campground in Arcadia, Florida.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/11wkcApgJKfTL8gy8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damnfino Drive<\/a> in Boca Grande, Florida (Google maps contains a typo, calling it Damifino Drive).<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/c2a2PQxHdCWSpF1M8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Damfino Lane<\/a> in Riverview, Florida.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canada isn&#8217;t immune either<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d5160.998202268723!2d-118.77473806754661!3d49.701404848933166!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x537d0babc3dff6a5%3A0x527e416b0f83d191!2sDamfino%20Creek%20Recreation%20Site!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1626437224284!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcan.gc.ca\/maps-tools-and-publications\/maps\/atlas-canada\/10784\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Atlas of Canada<\/a> includes a single reference, to a Damfino Creek in British Columbia. It is located just outside the boundaries of <a href=\"https:\/\/bcparks.ca\/eco_reserve\/bigwhite_er.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Big White Mountain Ecological Reserve<\/a>, &#8220;established to set aside ecosystems representative of the Engelmann Spruce-Subalpine Fir and Alpine Tundra Zones in the southern interior.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And how about the United Kingdom? I did find a reference in Great Yarmouth but I&#8217;m not sure whether it&#8217;s truly a geographic feature or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoopla.co.uk\/property\/damifino\/yarmouth-road\/hemsby\/great-yarmouth\/nr29-4nj\/17064055\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">simply some guy who named his house<\/a>. Perhaps the UK audience can figure that one out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Totally Unrelated<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you remember the 12MC discussion about the possibility of an <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=6513\">American Meridian Happy Hour<\/a> in the Washington, DC area, about a year ago? The place we selected went out of business and I put the effort on hold. I&#8217;m pleased to report that a new restaurant is about to open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arlnow.com\/2011\/11\/03\/memphis-barbeque-now-hiring-in-crystal-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in the same spot<\/a> in Crystal City.
