{"id":9543,"date":"2011-10-30T06:59:20","date_gmt":"2011-10-30T11:59:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=9543"},"modified":"2022-05-12T18:13:29","modified_gmt":"2022-05-12T23:13:29","slug":"european-capitals-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/european-capitals-new-york\/","title":{"rendered":"European Capitals of New York"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New York is certainly an international locale, a player on the world stage attracting people from every corner of the world. It has been that way for a long time, a point of debarkation for more than two centuries. Perhaps I should expect to see the names of so many European capitals diffused within the state. However it still surprised me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Search<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I counted fifteen European capital cities within the state of New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1ta-YOOVOJeorUW6b8JKShFxYUDg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially I started with a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Capitals_in_Europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complete list<\/a> of forty-six capital cities. Then I threw each name into Google Maps with a &#8220;, NY&#8221; suffix to find the easy strikes. Next, I ran the names of those that failed to produce a positive hit through <a href=\"https:\/\/geonames.usgs.gov\/pls\/gnispublic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">US Board on Geographic Names database<\/a> to find smaller locations that don&#8217;t appear on Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rome is the largest with nearly 50,000 residents. Most of the others had considerably smaller populations. Nonetheless, most of them registered populations of at least the single-digit thousands. That was impressive!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn&#8217;t have much luck with some of the more obscure capitals &#8212; Baku, Ljubljana, Podgorica, Vaduz, or Yerevan for instance &#8212; so maybe we should give it another hundred years and check again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This started out as a much larger search, incidentally. I focused on New York after noticing that the state appeared on the list time-after-time. A combined Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont gave it an honest run for the money. Even so, New York came out way ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Amsterdam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the derivations were as one would expect. People of a certain cultural or national heritage moved to an area and named a town after their homeland. That wasn&#8217;t always the case. Here are some of the more interesting stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/6118\/6875831586_3608860a88_b.jpg\" alt=\"Greetings from Amsterdam, New York. From the collection of the Boston Public Library; (CC BY 2.0)\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I examined Amsterdam (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/4Rbf83dqy6jSneHK8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). The area featured abundant flowing rivers including one that ran directly through town. This must have inspired early Dutch settlers. It&#8217;s a scenic place although maybe not exactly like the canals of the better-known Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Nonetheless, I&#8217;ll give them points for trying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The waters turned on Amsterdam in August 2011 when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Effects_of_Hurricane_Irene_in_New_York\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hurricane Irene pounded the Mohawk Valley<\/a>. Unfortunately, this Amsterdam is prone to flooding like the other one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Berne<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1008\/5180953459_4a54d1ab58_b.jpg\" alt=\"Berne, New York. Photo by Doug Kerr; (CC BY-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Berne holds a place in history as well, although much earlier (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/kvDy7sRb1o9LsG2z5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). It was the sight of the 1781 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bernehistory.org\/Local.aspx?ContentID=f6592e59-104a-4e72-ba09-4e62c80dacf3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dietz Massacre<\/a>. Those familiar with U.S. history will recognize 1781 as a date occurring during a period of warfare that led to American independence, and indeed that is the case in Berne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, Iroquois Indians commanded by Loyalists butchered the family of militia Capt. William Deitz in a particularly atrocious manner. Native Americans took the majority of the blame even though it was people of European descent who directed the action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lisbon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d181415.8933865032!2d-75.4611224294628!3d44.72729836056444!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x4ccc5389898d51b1%3A0xbc6c1ec1c4370402!2sLisbon%2C%20NY%2013658!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1622838301002!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One might be inclined to believe that a Portuguese community sprang-up improbably along the Canadian border, based upon the existence of Lisbon, NY. However, it may be a bit more complicated. The town began as Lisburn in some earlier records, which happens to share a name with <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/wx8U7B4zPL3rTM5x7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a town in Northern Ireland<\/a>. Coincidence? I think this one probably developed organically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Others Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some other places of interest:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/CiPJFb922XsRTov7A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stockholm<\/a>: Apparently the story is as simple as Swedish surveyors filling voids in the map and they decided to name a place after their homeland.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/JDUgwQo2QZbGmkra6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paris<\/a>: This has more to do with an early settler, Colonel Isaac Paris, than any direct connection to France.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/fH9H24JMTtjeJ8Dy6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Riga<\/a>: As much as I&#8217;d like this Riga to originate with the capital of Latvia, it&#8217;s pronounced RYE-ga rather than REE-ga which diminishes the possibility.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Totally Unrelated<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/october-snow.jpg\" alt=\"Virginia Snow in October. Photo by howderfamily.com\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Snow in Virginia in October? Really? October should be the perfect weather month, the month we wait for all the rest of the year. It&#8217;s not supposed to be cold enough for snow. Look! &#8212; the grass is still green; the leaves are still on the trees and have barely changed colors. Go away!
