I ignored it intentionally, and not so much because of what I thought about its claim. Actually, I had no way to confirm or dispute it so it didn&#8217;t really matter to me. I felt it got plenty of coverage from websites a whole lot more popular than Twelve Mile Circle. So why bother?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I need to talk about it because I have a new twist. I&#8217;ll offer a summary of what you&#8217;ve heard elsewhere and then move on to an interesting development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zavikon Fraud<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How many readers were expecting me to pull out this old chestnut when you saw the title of my post?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/gregorypleau\/263909482\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/99\/263909482_d1d9cf9aba_b.jpg\" alt=\"World's Shortest International Bridge. Photo by Gregory Pleau; (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Nope. Zavikon Island does NOT have the world&#8217;s shortest international bridge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I say the &#8220;alleged&#8221; shortest international bridge because, well, it may be short but it&#8217;s certainly not international. I know Google Maps can sometimes be just a little off while rendering borders, but this image is accurate (as confirmed by <a href=\"https:\/\/mapper.acme.com\/?ll=44.369346,-75.913431&amp;z=15&amp;t=T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a USGS topographic map<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d4716.342800106554!2d-75.914454!3d44.369791!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1577310483210!5m2!1sen!2sus\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there&#8217;s any doubt, hopefully this will demonstrate that Zavikon Island, one of the St. Lawrence River&#8217;s &#8220;1000 Islands&#8221; falls entirely within Canada. I don&#8217;t think my one lone voice will mitigate all the false information on the Internet. Hopefully this will make a small dent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Better Answer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The information in this post comes from 12MC loyal reader Scott (that&#8217;s Scott of the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=8952\">The Park You Cannot Visit<\/a> and <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=9079\">National Preserves<\/a>, as opposed to Scott of <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=9324\">Strip Annexation in Arizona<\/a>; two different Scotts who are both super contributors). He came up with the idea for this article and provided evidence for what may be a genuine world&#8217;s shortest international bridge. Well, if it&#8217;s not then it&#8217;s certainly within a few centimetres of that claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott visited the Czech Republic and Poland recently, including a location that I featured in an earlier article called <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=7387\">International Clip<\/a>. The whole point of that post was to feature places where someone could drive from one nation to another, while barely clipping a third one in between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m24!1m8!1m3!1d20139.80623351333!2d14.823652000000001!3d50.877904!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!4m13!3e0!4m5!1s0x47093c674b3fd0f5%3A0x668644a5af182c30!2s%C5%BDitavsk%C3%A1%20353%2C%20463%2034%20Hr%C3%A1dek%20nad%20Nisou%2C%20Czechia!3m2!1d50.8568717!2d14.8404505!4m5!1s0x47093d1f3b6e177f%3A0x123dd5c6383a87b8!2sFriedensstra%C3%9Fe%20100%2C%2002763%20Zittau%2C%20Germany!3m2!1d50.8841562!2d14.8179213!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1577310679149!5m2!1sen!2sus\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this example, a traveler &#8212; Scott in this instance &#8212; could begin a trip in the Czech Republic, clip a 1.5 km corner of Poland and then enter Germany. What&#8217;s left unstated is how Scott learned that I&#8217;d already featured an article on this spot because I certainly didn&#8217;t remember it. I&#8217;m guessing he probably used my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twelvemilecircle.com\/complete-index.html\">Interactive Map of Every Article Ever Featured on 12MC<\/a> when he returned home. Whatever the case, this is what Scott found as he crossed from the Czech Republic at that same point and entered Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Really Short Bridge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/international-bridge-to-poland.jpg\" alt=\"Entering Poland from Czech Republic\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice the &#8220;C&#8221; on the post marking the Czech side of the border in Scott&#8217;s photo. I guess I&#8217;m puzzled that this is such a mundane and unremarkable border crossing. It does sit within the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schengen_Area\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Schengen Area<\/a> so one expects things like that now. However I remember when I crossed between those two nations back in the &#8220;dark ages&#8221; on a train at night. Armed border guards with flashlights rousted us from our sleeper berth to make sure our passports were in order. Now? It&#8217;s no more difficult than <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=9387\">my trip through MDVAWV<\/a> a few days ago. It continuously amazes me to see how significantly the world has changed during my lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, let&#8217;s get off that tangent and return to the topic at hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/international-bridge-to-czech.jpg\" alt=\"Entering Czech Republic from Poland\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott turned around and took another photograph, this time with the &#8220;P&#8221; marking the Polish side. I like this one because I can also see the oval shield with the crest of the Czech Republic a couple of steps further along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Shortest?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortest international bridge? I don&#8217;t know. I guess someone could always find one a few whiskers shorter if he really wanted to claim the title. However, I have to figure at some point it would stop being a bridge and start being a road with a culvert beneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is clearly a bridge. Sure, it spans what appears to be either a minor creek or a drainage ditch. Even so, there&#8217;s no doubt that it crosses from one sovereign nation into another. I challenge anyone to find a shorter international bridge. It&#8217;s even shorter than the fake one in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks for the great research and detective work, Scott! I owe you a finder&#8217;s fee &#8212; a beer if our paths ever cross in the real world. Because 12MC really is that low-budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Totally Unrelated<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We let our older son pick the spot for our holiday next summer. He selected Oregon. I&#8217;ve already done Portland, some of the Columbia River and much of the Pacific Coast, so I&#8217;m thinking Bend, Oregon.
