I particularly enjoy those places <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=2644\">split by borders<\/a> or positioned <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=6853\">directly alongside borders<\/a> especially with a purpose in mind. I thought I\u2019d discovered, either on my own or through the generous contributions of readers of this blog just about every large object that could possibly straddle a border. Imagine my delight and surprise when I found a massive entity. The North-South Carolina border splits an entire theme park just outside of Charlotte. It\u2019s called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carowinds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carowinds<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d52227.185657190166!2d-80.97650841463519!3d35.1017388853329!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x88568fafdea3552d%3A0x327df38e2ee019fe!2sCarowinds!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1608326509145!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Portmanteau or Not<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Carowinds forms a portmanteau &#8212; <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=7599\">another one of my favorite topics<\/a>. However it&#8217;s a particularly lame example: Carolina and Winds. The Carolina part makes perfect sense. The Winds part seems a little weak. Apparently it relates to the breezes that blow across the Carolinas or some such nonsense.  At least <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carowinds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a> makes that attribution for what that&#8217;s worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suggest they change their name to Carocue. Then they could recognize the friendly barbecue battles that take place between the two states. South Carolina mustard would go up against Eastern NC vinegar or Western NC tomato (Lexington) styles. Everyone wins at a barbecue-focused theme park! Well, maybe not the pig, or the misguided person who thinks it\u2019s perfectly legitimate to barbecue beef or, God forbid, chicken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Well-Marketed Geo-Oddity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d333.6355396760255!2d-80.939986!3d35.104136!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1608326892476!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Optimally named or not, Carowinds deserves a lot of credit for capitalizing on its unusual geographic placement. A long segment of sidewalk even traces a length of the border. It extends from the northern entrance. Notice the telltale diagonal line in this satellite image. In typical fashion, the boundary imagined by Google Maps falls a few feet short of reality. We&#8217;ve seen similar Google errors plenty of times before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proprietor already knows something that I\u2019ve tried to portray through my writing: geo-oddities sell. People have an interest in strange geography. Unusual features can attract tourism and elicit economic development to areas that may not have been blessed with vibrant urban amenities or famous natural landmarks. It only takes a little entrepreneurial interest and a modicum of creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Straddling the Line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/theblackdog2071\/3722045221\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3461\/3722045221_d83aa56900_o.jpg\" alt=\"Carowinds Border Sign. Photo by theblackdog2071; (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Carowinds Border Sign<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice how Carowinds marked the border. This happens in various places throughout the park. Visitors see that they cross the border numerous times during their wanderings, adding a geo-oddity dimension to their day of rides and thrills. Carowinds is proud of their geography and it wants people to enjoy the experience. Or at least derive some amusement from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m10!1m8!1m3!1d2669.202980039749!2d-80.945045!3d35.100512!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1608327459116!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The border bisects a remarkable number of Carowinds rides and attractions. From the northern entrance traveling towards the southwest, the boundary slashes through the Vortex and Carolina Goldrusher roller coasters, splits a restaurant, cuts the Sydney Sidewinder water slide and an accompanying bathhouse, then completes its journey through the Crocodile Run float ride and the Thunder Road wooden roller coaster before the border exits the park. I\u2019m guessing that most guests probably don\u2019t pay too much attention to repeated border crossings as they hurtle down the larger roller coasters. However, I would.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I found one potential downside. Apparently North and South Carolina have considerably different laws related to the inspection of amusement park rides. North Carolina applies strict documentation standards. South Carolina is a bit more relaxed. That doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s unsafe but I imagine it could complicate oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m going to have to bring my kids here when they get a little older: <i>&#8220;go ride the coasters, kids, I\u2019m looking for border markers.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone following Twelve Mile Circle for any length of time knows that I have an unnatural fixation on borders and boundaries.
