Nothing good can come from this, and yet I can\u2019t resist. I noticed a place reputed to be the &#8220;oldest town in Ireland&#8221; as I investigated an unusual geographic feature. These types of claims are notoriously tenuous and probably doubly-so in a land as ancient as Ireland. At what point does a gathering of people magically transform into an initial town? It&#8217;s entirely subjective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nebulous definition allows multiple claimants to create their own versions of the truth. This condition extends to all corners of Ireland as I discovered when I tried to fact-checked that initial assertion. Let\u2019s investigate a few choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dingbat2005\/228000097\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/67\/228000097_5ae54d8772_b.jpg\" alt=\"Ballyshannon. Photo by dingbat2005; (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Ballyshannon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If victory went to the settlement with the most mentions, then Ballyshannon (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/swNmJNVc3GwMDtt29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) would be an obvious choice. The town and its cheerleaders have pushed aggressively to cement its reputation. The claim appears everywhere. It&#8217;s ubiquitous. The Ballyshannon Town Council says,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Ballyshannon, the oldest town in Ireland is steeped in history. Inis Saimer, the little island situated in the Erne Estuary is said to be the spot where the first inhabitants of Ireland landed. Parthalon [<em>sic.<\/em>], a chieftain from Scythia (near modern Macedonia) is said to have landed here around 2700 B.C.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice the use of the operative phrase \u201cis said.\u201d Really? Who said that, exactly? I\u2019m not sure that someone allegedly stepping ashore three thousand years ago necessarily creates a solid claim. However, I do give them points for boldly firing over the bow of any other town that might try to make a similar boast. A mere Viking founder would have a tough time dethroning Parthol\u00f3n of Scythia unless one goes with the smart money that says <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parthol%C3%B3n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parthol\u00f3n was a myth<\/a> rather than a historical figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kinsale, Co. Cork<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mobili\/32158135751\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/323\/32158135751_492b392910_b.jpg\" alt=\"Kinsale, Ireland. Photo by Mobilus In Mobili; (CC BY-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Kinsale<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The town of Kinsale (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/AGb4vBEkNYyxjFr68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) is another extremely common claimant. However, there does not appear to be even the thinnest attempt to substantiate Kinsale\u2019s assertion, unrealistic or otherwise. The Intertubes toss it around as a factual statement, as if the conventional wisdom is so self-evident that it requires no further elaboration beyond the statement itself. It&#8217;s hard to take the Kinsale claim seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Waterford, Co. Waterford<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/willowherb\/6111970146\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/6084\/6111970146_1af23b1dc1_b.jpg\" alt=\"Reginald's Tower. Photo by nz_willowherb; (CC BY-NC 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Reginald&#8217;s Tower, Waterford<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Waterford is arguably the oldest area of continuous urban settlement in Ireland&#8221; according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterfordcouncil.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Waterford City Council<\/a>. It dates back to a Viking founding in 941. The difference between Waterford and other claimants is that Waterford splits a hair and focuses on a slightly different status: the first &#8220;city&#8221; rather than the first town (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/yc8W4k332bnoeti68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). The image above is Reginald&#8217;s Tower which has its own claim to being oldest &#8212; allegedly the oldest civic, urban structure in Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kildare, Co. Kildare<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/16437735@N02\/14532917668\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2913\/14532917668_a3868cd0c0_b.jpg\" alt=\"Kildare Cathedral. Photo by Annie Gormlie; (CC BY-NC 2.0)\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Saint Brigid&#8217;s Cathedral, Waterford<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kildare (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/AeN39NNdW3Mr4X6r7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) receives frequent mention too. The <a href=\"http:\/\/kildarelocalhistory.ie\/\">Cill Dara Historical Society<\/a> says, &#8220;<em>It would appear that Kildare had developed urban characteristics long before the Vikings came to Ireland. It can therefore claim to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest, town in Ireland.<\/em>&#8221; I do give some credit to the Cill Dara Historical Society for adding the qualifier. Plenty of other sites drop the qualifier and claim exclusive title to the honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are plenty of other places that have been designated the oldest Irish town to varying degrees. I found references to Armagh, Dublin, Glenarm, Limerick, and D\u00fan Laoghaire, although to much lower frequencies than the others mentioned previously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My thought is that there are plenty of ancient towns in Ireland and it&#8217;s probably pointless to try to designate one above the rest. This seems to be more of an indication of the aspirations of tourism bureaus and local bragging rights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don\u2019t know why I torture myself.
