Sometimes it&#8217;s a shortcut, other times it&#8217;s amusing, but more often than not it&#8217;s annoying. I seem to enjoy the feature more in Google Maps. It seems to geo-locate based on IP address when making suggestions so it can save a lot of typing when I look for nearby spots. Sometimes even its incorrect assumptions can lead to interesting places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Virginia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/arlington-2012-tax-decal.jpg\" alt=\"Arlington County Car Decal for 2012 featuring the Hume School\"\/><figcaption><a href=\"\/blog\/?p=8434\">The Hume School<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I wanted to look at an image of the <a href=\"https:\/\/arlingtonhistoricalsociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arlington Historical Society<\/a> in the old Hume School built in 1891. This was an easy identification when I typed in Arlington Ridge Road and entered <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/MTwkMA3yXm6aSK4C8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Street View<\/a> mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d24856.324433837948!2d-77.08307577639464!3d38.85442869292473!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x89b7b6d1a221f3a1%3A0xfca9f4cea0df427c!2sArlington%20Ridge%2C%20Alexandria%2C%20VA!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1620645014142!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It certainly makes sense to have an Arlington Ridge Road at this location. It falls within Arlington County, Virginia so that&#8217;s an obvious distinction. Also it&#8217;s located along a ridge as one can see quite clearly if one selects &#8220;view larger map&#8221; and goes into terrain mode. This ridge is actually the very first edge of the Piedmont region of Virginia as it rises from the coastal plain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are great views from this vantage including Crystal City, Pentagon City, the airport and points across the Potomac River in Washington, DC. It&#8217;s a nice place. You should visit the historical society museum someday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, paradoxically, Google Maps suggested two other Arlington Ridge Roads in farther-flung locations. Arlington Ridge Road seems so completely specific. Yet, it appears in multiple places. It&#8217;s not Elm Street or Main Street, or something obviously repeatable like that. How many Arlington ridges could there be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tennessee<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d3215.1452835277805!2d-87.72700468523996!3d36.30878358005275!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x887b39ecea723acb%3A0x35dfd645fd8b0edd!2sArlington%20Ridge%20Rd%2C%20Tennessee%2037061!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1620645283204!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of them is located outside of Erin, Tennessee. The Arlington designation may be obscured by time, meaning I couldn&#8217;t find a simple answer in a thirty-second Internet search. Nonetheless, it definitely follows a ridge. Perhaps the use of Arlington shouldn&#8217;t surprise me, though. It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_the_most_common_U.S._place_names\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of the most common place name<\/a> in the United States. Maybe there should be <em>more<\/em> Arlington Ridge Roads?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">North Carolina<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d12945.855972541163!2d-78.84315714105436!3d35.788540870677394!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x89acf27ef6ae8c35%3A0x132479d3bc46f840!2sArlington%20Ridge%2C%20Cary%2C%20NC%2027513!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1620645569180!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another one is located in Cary, North Carolina, a rapidly growing suburb in the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. This one doesn&#8217;t even have a ridge, much less an Arlington, yet mysteriously there&#8217;s an Arlington Ridge Road. Then something on the map caught my eye: I spotted developments called Fairfax of the Parkway, Woods of Fairfax, and Shenandoah. Some searching found that these are all part of the same homeowners association called the Parkway Unit Owners Association which were all developed by a partnership called Parkway Associates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know what readers from Northern Virginia are already thinking: how much do you want to bet that someone working for the developers grew up in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC? Streets and subdivisions named for Arlington, Fairfax, and Shenandoah? That seems a little too coincidental. It doesn&#8217;t explain the &#8220;ridge&#8221; but perhaps our original Arlington Ridge provided a more direct inspiration than might be readily apparent on the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Also-Rans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Google Maps didn&#8217;t suggest any other Arlington Ridge Roads. Using general search engines, however, I discovered all manner of Arlington Ridge occurrences in other forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myarlingtonridge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arlington Ridge Homeowners Association<\/a> of Leesburg, FL on <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/XbNGGnz5Fq3ubc826\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arlington Ridge BOULEVARD<\/a> (oh-so-close!)<\/li><li>A small Arlington Ridge subdivision on <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ng37pS1Q68mhcmQ97\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arlington Ridge WAY<\/a> (close again!) north of Knoxville, TN.<\/li><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/9zugutBLpBrw7h87A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arlington Ridge Marketplace<\/a> shopping center in Akron, Ohio, on South Arlington Road.<\/li><li>Arlington Ridge Office Park on <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ZJ8dqvsLqHWQ2pvQ9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North Wilke Road<\/a> in Arlington Heights, IL<\/li><li>Arlington Ridge Apartments on <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/U1hugPFfH2meLWGB8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Taylor Street<\/a> in Shakopee, MN<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s a lot of Arlington Ridges!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Has anyone else used the automatic suggestions from Google Maps to discover new worlds?
