{"id":7515,"date":"2011-03-22T18:38:04","date_gmt":"2011-03-22T23:38:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=7515"},"modified":"2024-10-04T13:34:31","modified_gmt":"2024-10-04T18:34:31","slug":"sixteen-mile-circle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/sixteen-mile-circle\/","title":{"rendered":"12 Mile Circ&#8230; no wait, 16!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>[<em>UPDATE: 16 Mile Brewing Company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delmarvanow.com\/story\/news\/local\/delaware\/2018\/10\/01\/two-delaware-breweries-close-within-months-why\/1424732002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLOSED<\/a> in September 2018<\/em>]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look at the bottle my wife brought home from the grocery store a few days ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/16-mile-brewing-can.jpg\" alt=\"16 Mile Brewing Company Bottle. My own photo.\" width=\"603\" height=\"803\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you see the name of the brewery on the bottle? That\u2019s the 16 Mile Brewing Company. More importantly, the brewery is located in Delaware. Now, I\u2019ve heard of a certain 12 Mile referenced in Delaware before (look at the top of the page if you need a hint) but 16 Mile was brand new to me. I had to consult their website:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;The 16 Mile Brewing Company name hearkens back to the late 1700\u2019s when Georgetown was still known as Pettijohn\u2019s old field, a rather isolated town, centrally located in Sussex County. The area was &#8217;16 miles from anywhere&#8217; in the county and was the best place for farmers, merchants, and politicians to meet to conduct official business.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a rare confluence of two of my greatest enjoyments: geo-weirdness <a href=\"\/blog\/brewery-map\/\">and beer-geekery<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Extent of Those 16 Miles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of those times that I wish I could combine the functionality of various online mapping services into a single super-system. I wish someone would invent tool that mapped county lines and a circle of a specific radius from a known point, to embedded within a WordPress blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I need to get over it. That doesn\u2019t exist. Sadly, I don\u2019t have the technical ability to produce it either. So I\u2019ll give you the next best thing. I drew an image that shows a sixteen mile radius around Georgetown made using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freemaptools.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Free Map Tools<\/a> and offer a link to a <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/tfzr6Y5b5ahQE5cx9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map with Sussex County boundaries<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/sixteen-around-georgetown.jpg\" alt=\"Map of Sixteen Miles Around Georgetown Delaware.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Use your imagination. Hopefully you&#8217;ll see that the &#8220;16 miles from anywhere&#8221; in Sussex County is remarkably accurate. By the way, the number of geo-oddities packed into tiny Delaware still amazes me. This one comes closer to the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=55\">Transpeninsular Line<\/a> than to its more famous 12 Mile cousin at the other end of the state. Nonetheless it\u2019s a circle and it\u2019s in Delaware and it\u2019s good enough for me. I\u2019ll be sure to stop at the brewery the next time I\u2019m <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=22693\">on the way to Rehoboth Beach<\/a>. I\u2019ll be the one talking about all those crazy circles in Delaware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>UPDATE: <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=14413\">I did visit the brewery<\/a> in 2013.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So About the Beer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I tried the beer over the weekend. It was their Old Court Ale. They describe as &#8220;<em>An American-style ale that reserves the right to be different. A bit lighter in body, Old Court provides a citrusy hop aroma and caramel finish<\/em>.&#8221; I found it nicely malty, with a dark amber hue and very drinkable. I could probably do more justice to the description if it had been my first beer of the evening rather than the last. I&#8217;ll leave it to the likes of regular reader Daniel Harper of <a href=\"https:\/\/danielharper.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zymurgical Explorations<\/a> to someday get around to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actually the 22 ounce container isn&#8217;t a bottle at all. Rather, it&#8217;s an aluminum can shaped like a bottle. That&#8217;s a nice size. However, I think they missed a great marketing opportunity. Wouldn&#8217;t it be more appropriate for 16 Mile to serve their beverages in 16 ounce increments? Then they could take advantage of numerical symmetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know of only one other brewery with a tenuous geo-oddity connection now that I think about it. <a href=\"https:\/\/stbcbeer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Southern Tier Brewing Company<\/a> sits right off the Southern Tier Expressway in western New York. Go a couple hundred miles to the east on the expressway and hit a stretch <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=3946\">signed for New York<\/a> but running through Pennsylvania briefly.
