It had nothing to do with his fine words or sentiment. I was in total agreement. Glaring geographical errors in songs grate on my nerves too. My nemesis happens to be a completely different musical composition but I\u2019m getting ahead of myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cotton Fields<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Dunbar referenced a song by one Huddie William Ledbetter, a.k.a. &#8220;Lead Belly,&#8221; an iconic blues musician of the 1930\u2019s and 1940\u2019s who profoundly influenced generations of musicians even decades after his death and into the present. He wrote and performed &#8220;Cotton Fields,&#8221; a composition covered dozens of times by the likes of the Beach Boys, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Johnny Cash among many others. Here are the lines that sound strange to anyone with a basic understanding of U.S. geography:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>It was down in Louisiana<br>Just a mile from Texarkana<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/49045590367\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49045590367_74047f74fc_o.jpg\" alt=\"Cotton Field in Virginia\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsequent cover versions changed the second line to &#8220;just <i>about<\/i> a mile from Texarkana&#8221;, which I think may have had more to do with reworking the melody than any conscious attempt to weasel-word the error away. Geographic accuracy probably isn&#8217;t a top consideration for most musicians. Then again, how many geographers can carry a tune?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Louisiana is not a mile from Texarkana, or even &#8220;about&#8221; a mile from Texarkana. It&#8217;s more like thirty miles (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/oP7bwR7tdhDL7hXt8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Texarkana<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/44647946260\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7913\/44647946260_b7657dc6bc_o.jpg\" alt=\"Welcome to Texarkana\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many legends concerning the naming of Texarkana. Most agree that it\u2019s a portmanteau comprised of <strong>TEX<\/strong>as, <strong>ARK<\/strong>ansas and (most germane to this story) Louisi<strong>ANA<\/strong>. Beyond that, I couldn\u2019t determine the truth from the many variations floating around the Intertubes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some think the founders believed that the border with Louisiana was closer than it turned out to be in reality. However Texarkana dated to 1873 so that doesn\u2019t seem to make sense to me. Surveying techniques were certainly refined enough by the latter half of the Nineteenth Century to understand a thirty mile difference. Either way, there seems to be a number of strong historical and cultural ties between the corners of said states in the immediate vicinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lead Belly was born in Mooringsport, Louisiana (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/M8otkb2egDJraZBq7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>) in 1888. That\u2019s a town located in the far northwestern corner of the state and not all that far from Texarkana itself. He would have known the true location of Texarkana relative to Louisiana. So perhaps we can assume he was speaking figuratively? Even so, it\u2019s still an error and it still sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard to many a geographer\u2019s ear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe we can categorize this as a little poetic license on the songwriter&#8217;s part. It certainly seems like a forgivable transgression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=7483\">next installment<\/a> I will discuss an even more egregious example that really gets under my personal skin &#8212; my version of Mr. Dunbar&#8217;s cotton fields. It involves the Mountain State, so don&#8217;t give the answer away in the comments if you know it.
