I marveled at the sheer size of Lake Pontchartrain as I traveled between my brief stops in New Orleans, Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. There I crossed several miles of open water on a bridge. The water rolled beneath Interstate 10 as I drove in a stiff breeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Twin Span Bridge<\/a> still showed signs of extensive damage from Hurricane Katrina (map<\/a>). Dark, rubbery, temporary sections filled long gaps in the concrete. The storm actually washed away pieces of the bridge when it struck more than two years ago. Cranes on barges lifted construction material into place a few hundred yards to the east. There, a higher, wider replacement began to take shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
