Others seek knowledge using an actual question, as if the search engine is a human who happens to be sitting somewhere in the cloud. This probably happens less than five percent of the time based on years of screening my access logs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/enderst07\/4810954845\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4114\/4810954845_13f12b6948_b.jpg\" alt=\"questions. Image by Andrew Steele; (CC BY-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So I decided to record search engine queries that arrived in the form of a question on a single day. They provide a fascinating case study as well as an opportunity to present some &#8220;greatest hits&#8221; from my articles archive. I can only hope that these actual, genuine questions got proper responses from Twelve Mile Circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Are there any states that split a time zone? &#8211; <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=1240\">Yes<\/a>, 14 (not 13!) States are split by time zones.<\/li><li>What counties in the united states share a border with their namesake? &#8211; There are at least 11 instances of <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=4134\">adjacent counties with the same name<\/a>.<\/li><li>Approximately what percent of the population lives within 160km of the us border? &#8211; I looked in the logs and determined that this was a visitor from Canada, thus it&#8217;s <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=49\">approximately 75%<\/a>.<\/li><li>At what elevation is Nepal? &#8211; Mt. Everest is 8,848 m (29,029 ft) and it&#8217;s the answer this visitor probably sought. However, what they found was a much more interesting and obscure reference to the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=1274\">lowest elevation in Nepal<\/a> at 67m (220 ft).<\/li><li>How did Gambia get its shape? &#8211; Colonialism <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=47\">combined<\/a> with the Gambia River, put simply.<\/li><li>How many sides are there in the shape of the state of Colorado &#8211; It depends, but it&#8217;s <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=945\">not a rectangle<\/a>.<\/li><li>The prime meridian now goes through which city? &#8211; Greenwich, but <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=5809\">others too<\/a>.<\/li><li>What are the world&#8217;s northernmost and southernmost capitals? &#8211; <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=91\">Reykjav\u00edk, Iceland and Wellington, New Zealand<\/a>, respectively [<em><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: Nuuk, Greenland is now northernmost<\/em>].<\/li><li>What is the smallest county in Alabama by population? &#8211; <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=22338\">Greene County<\/a>, 9,974 people in the 2000 Census.<\/li><li>Why do you think the time zone boundary lines are not straight lines? &#8211; Probably because national, provincial, city, etc., boundaries <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=3976\">are not straight lines<\/a>, and groups of affiliated people don&#8217;t want to be split into different times.<\/li><li>Why does the southern border of Massachusetts dip into Connecticut? &#8211; That&#8217;s the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=409\">Southwick Jog<\/a> and it has an interesting history.<\/li><li>Why is Kearneysville coast guard in West Virginia? &#8211; The late Sen.
