Presumably they find what they need and then they move along. Earlier this week the query captured in my website traffic log said, &#8220;<em>45th parallel near haines oregon along highway 30<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m a big fan of that particular circle of latitude. I\u2019ve gone out of my way to immortalize my personal crossings of 45\u00b0 North on a number of occasions. Remember <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=1446\">my visit to the 45X90 Spot<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8842370791\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3817\/8842370791_64942ccc48_b.jpg\" alt=\"45\u00b0 North + 90\u00b0West Confluence. I wondered if I could pull together a brief post with Street View images of 45<sup>th<\/sup> parallel road signs. Then I discovered quickly that somebody had already done <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wurlington-bros.com\/Museum\/45th\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">something like that<\/a>. And their results were far superior to anything I\u2019d ever complete. I hate it when that happens. Still, I tip my hat to the Wurlington Brothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Now?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, that left me without a subject for today. But then I spotted Halfway, a town a little further to the east of Haines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m24!1m8!1m3!1d724230.6416661916!2d-117.516142!3d44.84140500000001!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!4m13!3e0!4m5!1s0x54a4939161cbd36b%3A0x71bc327c8223e80!2sHaines%2C%20Oregon!3m2!1d44.9115341!2d-117.9388288!4m5!1s0x54a4478743210873%3A0xd2a4fe2487c72ccf!2sHalfway%2C%20Oregon%2097834!3m2!1d44.880714999999995!2d-117.1146172!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1626615297201!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How incredibly cool, I thought. The town founders recognized their fortunate choice of latitude, numerically half way between the Equator and the North Pole. I attempted to plot the parallel where it bisected Halfway, Oregon and learned\u2026 it doesn\u2019t touch <em>any<\/em> part of Halfway. Rather, it crosses <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/hh71s6YsPedbqvFcA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a few miles to the north<\/a> in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. That\u2019s disappointing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also a bit of uncertainty about the halfway that Halfway represents. Speculation seems to center on the establishment of a late-19th Century post office at the midpoint of two flea-spec towns that no longer exist. However, the current Halfway isn&#8217;t even located at the site of the original post office. It moved into the town after it was platted. Apparently it&#8217;s halfway to nothing and it doesn&#8217;t seem to have anything to do with the 45<sup>th<\/sup> parallel either. That\u2019s doubly disappointing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Name Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/travelbakercounty\/9193863199\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3666\/9193863199_8deff4dcba_b.jpg\" alt=\"Baker County Tourism \u2013 basecampbaker.com 7720. Photo by Baker County Tourism Travel Baker County; (CC BY-ND 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonetheless, I still like Halfway but for a completely different reason. It may not qualify as a geo-oddity but it certainly deserves stature as an oddity of a more general nature. Halfway became Half.com during the height of the dot-com boom. In 1999, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/oregon-town-adopts-com-identity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNET News reported<\/a>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Despite the fact that Half.com is based in Philadelphia, it has persuaded the City Council in Halfway, Ore., to rename the 360-person town after the e-commerce site, which will officially launch next year. After abandoning thoughts of trying to strike a partnership with towns such as Half Moon Bay, Calif.&#8211;which is bigger, closer to Silicon Valley and home to a famous pumpkin festival&#8211;Half.com got a bite from Halfway. Town officials hope their new &#8220;.com&#8221; name will draw tourists and small businesses to Halfway. For its part, Half.com just needs some publicity\u2026 But the town, which isn&#8217;t legally changing its name, doesn&#8217;t see the move as much of a risk.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Halfway got some cash and a few computers for the local school, and posted road signs with their Half.com name at town entrances. Then eBay purchased half.com a few months later and the arrangement began to unravel almost immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I started with a random geography query that dropped onto my lap from a search engine, and I found myself immersed in dot-com nostalgia.
