It\u2019s not just England where place names migrated counter-intuitively against the tide away from the Americas, but to other parts of Europe as well. I noticed patterns as I savored the comments including the repetition of Amerika (with a &#8220;k&#8221;) as found in languages such as Czech, German, Dutch and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Czechia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/michal_ritter\/49909746913\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49909746913_fa53506748_b.jpg\" alt=\"Quarry Great America. Photo by Michal Ritter; (CC BY 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Reader &#8220;Matt&#8221; <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=7045\/#comment-2214\">knew about<\/a> an Amerika in the Czechia. I found several. This included Lomy Amerika (<a href=\"https:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=&amp;sl=cs&amp;tl=en&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lomy-amerika.cz%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website auto-translated<\/a>), the America Quarries in the Central Bohemian Region (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/8NDEx468jmS8d5uj9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). Lom Velk\u00e1 Amerika qualifies as the most impressive of the set, the &#8220;Great America Quarry&#8221;. Some call this the Czech Grand Canyon. Mining for limestone began here around 1900 and continued for decades thereafter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deep quarries and connecting tunnels litter the entire area so divers, spelunkers and explorers love to visit. <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=cs&amp;u=http:\/\/cs.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amerika_%28v%25C3%25A1pencov%25C3%25A9_lomy%29&amp;ei=6TQ0TbPTNY-q8Aab8YiNCQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=translate&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=11&amp;ved=0CFQQ7gEwCg&amp;prev=\/search%3Fq%3Dlomy%2Bamerika%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3DmGU%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26prmd%3Divns\">Czech Wikipedia explains<\/a> that the name Amerika came from a nearby farmhouse but then the trail turned cold. I couldn&#8217;t trace it any further. The people who named the collective quarries continued the theme with some of the individual parcels, giving them names like Canada and Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also found a <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/W9jXHYFpaFeXjrnF6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tiny village called Amerika<\/a> (perhaps the same one that Matt found?) near the slightly larger village of Pametice, a bit north of Brno in the South Moravian Region. Additionally I discovered a pond named similarly near Franti\u0161kovy L\u00e1zne in the Karlovy Vary Region, in the far western part of the country<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amerika seemed particularly popular in the Czechia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Germany<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/gravitat-off\/2459471230\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2014\/2459471230_23e0b65068_b.jpg\" alt=\"amerika Bahnhof. Photo by gravitat-OFF; (CC BY 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Reader &#8220;Robin&#8221; <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=7045\/#comment-2213\">mentioned<\/a> two German villages called Amerika. I found one of them, the Amerika near Penig, in Saxony. I couldn\u2019t find the other one. Robin, if you read this, could you place the lat\/long coordinates or a Google Map link in the comments?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I visited the Penig site (<a href=\"https:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=de&amp;u=https:\/\/www.penig.de\/leben\/ortsteile\/amerika\/&amp;prev=search&amp;pto=aue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website auto-translated<\/a>). Naturally I loved the idea of an &#8220;Amerika&#8217;s Biergarten&#8221; and especially enjoyed the photo of the owner in a cowboy hat and vest. I don\u2019t match the American cowboy stereotype but I suppose there are worse comparisons. I\u2019ll accept cowboy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s thought that this Amerika may have had something to do with people having to cross the Mulde River from Penig in the mid 19th Century so they could work in a local factory. Thus, sarcastically, they may have equated it with a long trip across the Atlantic. That\u2019s the popular legend. The website admits that nobody really knows how Amerika got its name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Netherlands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/601\/32163248275_f47d51e7b1_b.jpg\" alt=\"Op naar rustpunt in Recreatiecentrum Ronostrand. Photo by Henk-Jan van der Klis; (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)\"\/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ronostrand.nl\/\">Ronostrand<\/a> in Amerika<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I had time to find one more Amerika, this one in the province of Drenthe in the Netherlands (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/F511TSGkh1a9D9At7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). Dutch Wikipedia (<a href=\"https:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=nl&amp;tl=en&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fnl.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FAmerika_(Drenthe)&amp;sandbox=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website auto-translated<\/a>) maintains, however, that this Amerika predates Columbus. It\u2019s quite an interesting coincidence if that\u2019s the case. Also, let\u2019s be sure we don\u2019t confuse it with the <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/9LGCXaB8pKf5tkCk6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">America in the province of Limburg<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many other nations and languages use the Amerika spelling. I have no doubt that I could find several more examples spread throughout central and northern Europe.
