What is the first foreign country you would reach if you traveled due south from Detroit, Michigan?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canada!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d188878.27269006948!2d-83.14296031408168!3d42.29510667106595!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x883b2ac1b54f886b%3A0xb66cd49527fcdc51!2sWindsor%2C%20ON%2C%20Canada!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1575683081782!5m2!1sen!2sus\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A curve in the Detroit River, the narrow ribbon of water that joins Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie, creates a situation where Windsor, Canada is in fact due south of Detroit. The reason this confounds common conception, of course is that one naturally thinks of Mexico as being south of the United States rather than Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/daquellamanera\/14585194563\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3854\/14585194563_16756a56a9_b.jpg\" alt=\"Windsor, Canada. In this instance a river serves as a convenient means to mark an international border.
