{"id":6513,"date":"2010-11-14T07:47:21","date_gmt":"2010-11-14T12:47:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=6513"},"modified":"2022-05-19T06:34:14","modified_gmt":"2022-05-19T11:34:14","slug":"american-meridian-gathering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/american-meridian-gathering\/","title":{"rendered":"American Meridian Gathering"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I draw your attention to a comment from faithful reader &#8220;Craig&#8221; on my recent <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=6412\">Third Anniversary<\/a> announcement. I know a lot of you use RSS to skim through the articles so you probably didn&#8217;t catch it. He said, &#8220;Maybe we should have a Twelve Mile Circle Happy Hour to celebrate&#8221; and he even offered a suggestion, &#8220;Now, the question is, where would the best place be in the DC area to have a geo-oddities themed hour? I think somewhere along the American Meridian would be a good choice.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d been mulling similar thoughts for awhile, wondering if or when we might have a large enough critical mass of geo-geeks in the Washington, DC area to pull something like this off. Maybe we&#8217;re there. Let&#8217;s explore this further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1ziJRil0vEQ4DMU7iZhg7qsv7rQQ&amp;hl=en\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=2373\">American Meridian<\/a> is a great suggestion on a number of levels. It goes through heavily-populated areas, it&#8217;s readily accessible and it offers abundant choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Crystal City<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Craig suggest an area known as <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=17358\">Crystal City<\/a>, Virginia. That&#8217;s a densely packed community of office buildings, high-rise apartments and dozens of restaurants. I&#8217;m extremely familiar with this spot because I come here five days a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funny thing, while I&#8217;m completely familiar with the American Meridian conceptually, I&#8217;d never followed it on a map precisely until Craig mentioned Crystal City. I suppose that&#8217;s the whole forest vs. trees situation. Now I realize that I cross the outdated Prime Meridian between its eastern and western hemispheres twice each workday. Sweet. This leads me to two inescapable conclusions: (1) the people at work are going to think I&#8217;m rather odd when I mention it; and (2) my inner geek compels me to dispel their ignorance anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96225726@N08\/8843574356\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2815\/8843574356_a4eb4e0587_b.jpg\" alt=\"American Meridian in Washington, DC. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>How about Mackey\u2019s Public House, Craig wonders. I reply, that&#8217;s an excellent choice but my calculation puts the actual American Meridian line through the Chinese restaurant next door, Charlie Chiang&#8217;s (and I&#8217;m not going to include a link because it plays cheezy music in the background and I hate the intrusion. Punks). <em><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: Both restaurants are now closed.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve measured the American Meridian several times and it keeps cutting through Charlie Chiangs although I&#8217;d desperately prefer it run through Mackey\u2019s instead. Somehow the all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet seems altogether less desirable than a couple of pints of Guinness. Regular readers of Twelve Mile Circle know that I&#8217;m fine with &#8220;close enough&#8221; calculations. However, I don&#8217;t know how purists might feel if we met at the place <em>next to the place<\/em> intersected by the line. Buffet or beer? <a href=\"\/blog\/brewery-list\/\">The choice is simple for me<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Continuing the Notion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I got to thinking about an entire American Meridian theme. What if the idea took off and we wanted to consider future meridian events? There&#8217;s an interesting situation directly above the restaurants. The line slices cleanly through a swimming pool atop the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine being able to swim from one hemisphere to the other. Imagine someone trying to work that into a pickup line. Relationship FAIL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some other fascinating places cleaved by the meridian:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=107752996015103220907.0004948a81eafb7d43629&amp;ll=38.83051,-77.051247&amp;spn=0.000992,0.002755&amp;t=h&amp;z=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Afghan Restaurant<\/a>, one of the other sites Craig suggested.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=107752996015103220907.0004948a81eafb7d43629&amp;ll=38.850261,-77.051244&amp;spn=0.001984,0.005509&amp;t=h&amp;z=18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A silly little highway<\/a> that I <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=1317\">told you about<\/a> several months ago in a totally unrelated article.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=107752996015103220907.0004948a81eafb7d43629&amp;ll=38.912566,-77.051395&amp;spn=0.001983,0.005509&amp;t=h&amp;z=18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Embassies of Latvia and Haiti<\/a>. Haiti in particular deserves a little good news after its troubles.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=107752996015103220907.0004948a81eafb7d43629&amp;ll=38.924027,-77.051051&amp;spn=0.001982,0.005509&amp;t=h&amp;z=18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Several restaurants in the Woodley Park<\/a> section of Washington, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/travel\/counties\/district_of_columbia.html\">DC<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=107752996015103220907.0004948a81eafb7d43629&amp;ll=38.931038,-77.051277&amp;spn=0.001982,0.005509&amp;t=h&amp;z=18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The elephant house<\/a> at the Smithsonian&#8217;s National Zoo.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=107752996015103220907.0004948a81eafb7d43629&amp;ll=38.944094,-77.051676&amp;spn=0.000991,0.002755&amp;t=h&amp;z=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens<\/a>, the former residence of collector and heiress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hillwoodmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marjorie Merriweather Post<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=107752996015103220907.0004948a81eafb7d43629&amp;ll=38.967017,-77.044373&amp;spn=0.031699,0.088148&amp;t=h&amp;z=14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seriously large chunks of Rock Creek Park<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So let&#8217;s hear from some DC-area aficionados of geo-oddities or from those from those of you who may travel here periodically. What&#8217;s the best timing (maybe after the holidays)? What location (is Mackey\u2019s acceptable to the purists)? Please reply in the comments.
