{"id":6480,"date":"2010-11-10T00:19:24","date_gmt":"2010-11-10T05:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/?p=6480"},"modified":"2022-05-28T08:36:54","modified_gmt":"2022-05-28T13:36:54","slug":"beaver-island-in-the-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/blog\/beaver-island-in-the-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Beaver Island in the News"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>There\u2019s an interesting human interest story about Beaver Island, Michigan making the rounds via the Associated Press, <em>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/wbna40047613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Technology a blessing, a curse for remote island.&#8221;<\/a><\/em> I mention it both because it\u2019s an interesting narrative and because I\u2019m one of very few people who&#8217;ve actually visited Beaver Island. If you care to know more about that journey you can <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=23053\">stop by my permanent travel site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/travel\/michigan_beaver_island_whiskey_point.jpg\" alt=\"Beaver Island Harbor Lighthouse. Photo by howderfamily.com; (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0)\"\/><figcaption>That&#8217;s me at Beaver Island Harbor Lighthouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of you probably already know about Beaver Island because you\u2019re map aficionados (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/TDJey185BrVBK8Yc9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">map<\/a>). It\u2019s the largest island in Lake Michigan but it\u2019s not the easiest place to reach. People generally get back-and-forth <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=21736\">using a ferry<\/a> that takes about two hours. Very limited air service exists either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not the Popular One<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the general public knows anything about islands within the state of Michigan, which in itself is doubtful, they&#8217;d probably think of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mackinac_Island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mackinac<\/a>. Beaver Island is the anti-Mackinac. It\u2019s 180\u00b0 diametrically opposed to anything even resembling Mackinac. It&#8217;s a pristine tourist-free zone. When I visited, the residents kept saying, &#8220;please, please don\u2019t tell anybody about this place.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eh, I\u2019m not so worried about mentioning it on Twelve Mile Circle though. It\u2019s only us geo-geeks here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remaining Obscure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t read about Beaver Island in the tourist magazines. There aren\u2019t really any amenities an average tourist would enjoy other than the natural beauty of the island itself. I thought the <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=1358\">island-on-an-island<\/a> was particularly interesting but would that resonate with the general public? In other words, I loved it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I went because I saw the dotted line of a ferry extending from mainland Michigan and decided I needed to take a ride. What can I say?: <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=22346\">I have an odd affinity for ferry rides<\/a>. Fortunately the destination proved as remarkable as the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=5976\">Tangier Island<\/a> and now Beaver Island. The mainstream media continues to expose my favorite island escapes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12MC Loves Footnotes!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">PS &#8211; don\u2019t get too used to me posting an article every day.
