My local newspaper included a special section on the upcoming 150<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Civil War in the United States. This image from West Virginia filled the entire back page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howderfamily.com\/graphics\/blog\/west_virginia_civil_war.jpg\" alt=\"West Virginia Civil War Advertisement\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The copy reads,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;A nation was nearly torn in half. A state actually was. The war that forced brother against brother and divided a nation gave birth to the only state that seceded from the Confederacy&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"it-also-includes-a-very-precise-location-39-05-49-19-n-80-28-00-72-w\">It also includes a very precise location, 39\u00b005&#8217;49.19&#8243;N, 80\u00b028&#8217;00.72&#8243;W.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d1265.982601119851!2d-80.46796104195641!3d39.0969971948851!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x0%3A0x0!2zMznCsDA1JzQ5LjIiTiA4MMKwMjgnMDAuNyJX!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1606857203757!5m2!1sen!2sus\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advertisement does not disclose what one will find at that location. Presumably it relates to Civil War in some manner or another. I dropped the coordinates into Google. Unfortunately it returned only a single English language page, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanheritage.com\/sites\/default\/files\/heritage-traveler\/downloads\/west-virginia-historic-guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guide to Historic Sites in West Virginia<\/a>. Undoubtedly that will change the moment I post this article and Google indexes it. For now it&#8217;s the only one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"jackson-s-mill\">Jackson&#8217;s Mill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An analysis of the map shows that it corresponds to a place called <a href=\"https:\/\/jacksonsmill.wvu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jackson&#8217;s Mill<\/a>. The West Virginia University Extension Service operates this facility. Here&#8217;s how they describe it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;WVU Jackson\u2019s Mill, home to West Virginia 4-H camping, is a rustic-style conference and gala facility in a historic heritage-based setting a few miles outside of Weston, W.Va. Jackson\u2019s Mill is also home to the West Virginia Fire Academy, a one-of-a-kind training facility for volunteer and professional firefighters from around the state and nation.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Guide to Historic Sites provides what is likely the smoking gun. &#8220;<em>Confederate Gen. Thomas &#8216;Stonewall&#8217; Jackson grew up in a log cabin farmstead on this site<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think most of the U.S. audience is probably familiar with Stonewall Jackson. However, please feel free <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stonewall_Jackson#Working_and_teaching_at_Jackson.27s_Mill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to check his extensive biography<\/a> if you don&#8217;t know his story. I suppose the advertisement featured this location as a means to demonstrate the contradictions that often occurred during the war. Jackson became a famous Confederate general. Meanwhile, his grew up in a homestead that remained within the Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The underlying theme of the advertising campaign is &#8220;Where is your West Virginia.&#8221; Maybe the photos in the advertisement came from the recent Jackson&#8217;s Mill Jubilee that included an encampment of Civil War Reenactors? Could the solution be that simple?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If so, My West Virginia would be somewhere around <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/EdxdeYfqGLyb74nv6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">38.053977,-81.068269<\/a> on some classic <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=23792\">whitewater along the New River<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"more-thoughts\">More Thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I dunno. I&#8217;m thinking there must be more to this riddle. If I were a geocacher I&#8217;d be racing to that exact spot to be the first to arrive there and see what&#8217;s been left behind. It&#8217;s too precise a coordinate to simply mark the corner of a field on a homestead where Stonewall Jackson lived as a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not lost on me, by the way, that I&#8217;m being used as part of a guerrilla marketing campaign. Obviously they threw the lat\/long out there hoping a geography or history buff would latch onto it and blog about it, and generate some free publicity for them. Well I&#8217;m both, and I&#8217;m also a bit compulsive so I can&#8217;t help myself. I can see the the fine folks behind the campaign talking amongst themselves over coffee this morning, &#8220;<em>well it&#8217;s about time someone noticed our breadcrumb<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hope West Virginia Tourism at least throws a little link love my way in return.
